My wife and I are planning to return to Italy in Sept 2013. Our first trip was to Florence which we thoroughly enjoyed. The museums and fantastic art, the food, the friendly people and of course wonderful Florence. This time we are debating whether to spend two weeks along the Amalfi coast, one place, or just one week there and spend the following week in Venice. If we did go to Venice, it would be by train. We would like to avoid renting a car this time around. Would like to hear from Fodorites who have traveled in Italy to both places sans car. Thank you.

You definitely don't need a car in Venice, too much water! My guess is that from one to the other by train would involve travelling via Rome or Naples, Naples preferably for the AC or there is the possibility of Salerno at the very far end of the area. If you're going to fly into Venice and then out of Naples (or vice versa), why not think of flying between the two?
Once on the AC, the SITA bus or ferries will take you to most towns that you want to visit, but if your September break falls outside of the school holidays, the roads will be a lot quieter, so a hire car may not be a bad thing.
Hi A,

I think that one week on the AC is sufficient.
You can visit the Naples Archaeological Museum, Herculaneum, Pompei and Paestum, which should sate your appetite for ancient ruins, Capri and Naples itself and still have time for Positano, Amalfi and Sorrento.
As noted above, the SITA bus will afford you good transportation, as will the ferry service.
You might find my trip report useful.

Venice, of course, is not to be missed.
Enjoy your visit.
Well my 2 cents - spend maybe 8 nights7 in the AC area, 5 nights in Sorrento for daytripping to Naples, Pompei and down the coast, then go to a chill out destination, maybe Capri for 3 nights. Since you mention art I am thinking the AC has some, but not like Florence. Then head up to Venice for the remaining time - you could add a few nights in the AC, I would think 5 nights in Venice is sufficient - alot depends on your travel speed. You certainly don't need a car in either destination, in fact it would probably be a headache in both!
