Amalfi Coast Tours - Suggestions

Me and my wife are planning a trip to Positano and we would like to take few tours around the area and I was wondering if any one can help me out by giving some info in regards taking tours on the Amalfi Coast. Any info will be appreciated.
Thanks

What type of tours are you interested in? Pompeii? Just thinking of private transportation from town to town rather than SITA bus or boat? Hiking group? Boat tour of the coast and Emerald Grotto with Gennaro?

If you just want to do the usual visits to the towns along the coast, you really don't need a tour. Probably a good guidebook is enough for most visitors.

I agree with Dayle -- no need for a tour unless that it your preference.

If you haven't already gotten a guidebook, I recommend the Rough Guide or Lonely Planet as your primary resource. I would also recommend that you consult Fodor's, Frommer's, or the Michelin Green Guides to help prioritize. If you are seeking inspiration, you might want to consult the National Geographic Traveler, Insight Guides, or Eyewitness.

Enjoy!

I posted this on your other thread. (If you can't find your other threads, Peter, just click your name!)

We normally do touring and sightseeing out and about on our own using public transit.

We had a single day to do the Amalfi coast in April so we wanted to make the most of it and make it stress free. We could have rented a car, but that always means one us has to keep eyes on the road. Also the stress of driving on narrow, winding, unfamiliar roads.

We opted for a private tour and were very glad we did. It was a real treat and not one we do often, but well worth the cost in our opinion.

We did a 6 hour tour with

Francesco was an excellent guide with a great knowledge of the area. Perfect English, charming and proud of his heritage, region and career. He also recommended a private guide for Pompeii as well..

Hi Peter80, you will love the scenery along the Amalfi Coast and Sorrento. I would suggest a private guide as you will learn more w/ a guide than on your own. The drive along the coast is on narrow windy roads so you can sit back and relax and enjoy the sights. You can meet tour busses or larger vehicles and it can get hairy having them try and pass you or get by on opposite lane. Our driver stopped in Amalfi and we walked about the town. There is a beautiful church located there and there was a wedding that day. Beautiful....

As the above poster noted, Francesco Marrapese is a highly regarded driver and you would have an enjoyed day w/ him. A friend of mine booked him when they visited Italy and she raved about him. You didn't say when you were planning your visit but I wouldn't wait to book a driver if you will be traveling in the high tourist season.

Francesco can also plan a Pompeii visit for you if you like and get you a tour guide to take you thru. Only authorized guides can show you Pompeii. It is an amazing sight to see and one I would suggest. You would need to allow 1.5 hr. minimal to tour there. Good luck.
Enjoy your visit.
