Amalfi Coast or Lake Region?

My mother and I want to make a brief 4-day stop in Italy in early October and I'm wondering where we should invest our 4 days. As I've been to Italy before, I've narrowed it to either Amalfi Coast or Lake Region (we are not fans of big cities/museums). Suggestions???

We have visited both areas but not at the time of year you are considering. The average temps in Oct in Como for instance are 52F high and 42F low whereas Naples is 72F high and 53F low. Weather aside, we preferred the lakes region to the Amalfi Coast. Bellagio was beautiful but it might not be that pleasant if the temps were as low as they apparently are in October. Perhaps someone else has been there in early Oct. and can give you some guidance on this. The Amalfi Coast also begins to wind down in the fall but I don't think this happens until November but again someone else who has been there at that time of year can help. There aren't any big cities or museums in either spot unless you want to visit Pompeii or the other Roman sites in the Amalfi area. The lakes region doesn't have any such ancient sites to visit as far as I know. Again weather might be your guiding factor.

I have just returned from the Amalfi Coast and loved it but if I were going again it would be in either May/June or Sept/Oct as the weather would be so much more bearable.

I have also been to Lake Garda which is also lovely but I think it would be better visited during the summer months as it will be getting cold and wet in October.

Hi t,

Weather on the AC in early Oct is generally still pleasant.

See my trip report for ideas on what to do, etc.

I have been to the Lakes in October and the temperatures were very pleasant. The main problem is that it is very foggy and overcast in October. However, it usually burns off by noon, and many find it very romantic.

Weather wise, Amalfi is great in October.

Thank you for the replies, the Amalfi Coast it will be. We'll be coming from the West Coast of France, which can be cool in October, so the warmer, the better.
