Hello,
I am arriving in Naples from Sardinia at about 5pm on a Friday, and plan to spend 2 nights in the Amalfi Coast region before heading back to Rome on Sunday morning for a flight out at 3pm. We will not have a car for our time in the region and are not sure where to stay. I think that Salerno would be the best choice transportation-wise vs. Sorrento (to get back to Rome on time), but it does not look like the best place to stay. We are considering staying in Amalfi town but are not sure how we would get to a hotel from Salerno, without having a car (would taxis be too expensive, would the SITA bus get us to accomodation on the coastline)?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Totally lost on this one!

Just Returned from a Gate 1 Danube River Cruise
merl416, Naples is closer to Rome via train by at least an hour. Although it is my understanding that Salerno also has a train to Rome, it is further south.
When hub and I were in Naples, we took another train, the Circumvesuviana, to Sorrento and based there. The Sita bus got us to Amalfi in over an hour.
What did you have in mind to visit? It would almost be more efficient to stay in Naples and take a ferry to Amalfi Coast towns as day trips from Napoli. Please clarify a little.

As it will be our last 2 nights in Italy, we wanted to stay in one of the coastal towns (Amalfi, Sorrento, Positano), rather than Naples or Salerno because they are more city-type places. There is a direct train to Rome from Salerno (an hour or so longer than the Naples ->Rome train), but there would be no transfer (as there would be if going from Naples ->Sorrento on the Circumvesuviana).
While we're in Amalfi we would like to see all the coastal towns (by SITA and ferry).
Depending on when you are traveling, you can go from Salerno to Amalfi on a ferry (delightful and very reasonable price) if the ferries are running then or by SITA bus (cheaper still and a beautiful drive). Both easy access from Salerno train station.
Amalfi is very close (handful of miles) to other places you might want to visit like Positano or Ravello so transport while you are there will be no problem.

I do think connection via Salerno makes sense for you if you stay in Amalfi. The SITA bus is one option as is the coastal ferry system depending on the month.
Amalfi would be fine, but you could also look at hotels in Cetara, Minori, Vietri, or Maiaori, which are on the coast but closer to Salerno than Amalfi.
I understand. By not having to worry about 2 train lines, Salerno would be a better choice for you.
Vietri sul Mare would be even closer to Salerno and was on our "to see" list because of its ceramics museum and church dome decorated with majolica. It took us over an hour to get to Amalfi from Sorrento on the SITA bus. We ran out of time for Vietri. Ravello is where a good friend loved to "vedge" and it too is near Salerno.
SITA bus services both places but other Fodorites will have to confirm with first-hand info.
Our experience with the SITA buses was that they arrive when they feel like it. At least from Positano back to Sorrento.
