Amalfi Coast Ferries

Hey gang...I'm taking the train from Rome to Naples to do a day trip on the Amalfi Coast. Our plan is to arrive into Naples and take a Ferry to Amalfi. My question is once we arrive into Naples, can we choose between whether to take an open air ferry or a hydrofoil? Ideally, we'd like to take an open air ferry so as to take in all of the scenery. Also, the way I understand it, Naples has two Marinas. Which one should we go to?

Thanks
Summer in Italy

We just returned from Italy and spent 4 days in Amalfi. We used http://www.metrodelmare.com/. The ferry that we took was not open air. They run from Napoli Beverello and cost 10€. The ferry does take about 1:45 hours each way. There have been other ferries that ran from Naples to Amalfi but we did not see any.

Summer - Someone posted recently that the Metro del Mare hydrofoil service isn't currently stopping at Positano for technical reasons - and their website (www.metrodelmare.com) confirms this.

Unless the high season direct service is reinstated before you go, your best alternative option would be to continue to SALERNO by train instead - and take the Salerno-Positano ferry (60-70 mins) from there.

This is an open deck ferry - so better suits your preference anyway. The ferry jetty is a 5 mins walk from Salerno station.

Currently departures are at:
08:40 - 09:40 - 11:40 - 14:10 - 15:30
Fare: €6

Here's the link:

Hope this helps ...

So how long do you think it would take to take the train from Rome to Salerno, then the ferry to Positano? Would this be a recommended day trip? I am wanting to do this on a Saturday in September.

Hi Heidi,

I agree with Steve. Train to Salerno, take the ferry to Amalfi and the bus from there, or the ferry to Positano and take the bus to Sorrento.

From Sorrento, take the Cirumvesuviana train to Naples and the Trenitalia train back to Rome.

Train schedules are at www.trenitalia.com

Ferry for Positano – Amalfi - Salerno (P.zza della Concordia) are at

Bus schedules are at
