I am planning a day trip to Capri and the Amalfi Coast from Naples in early June. I want to take a ferry fron Naples and visit the Blue Grotto in the morning and then take a ferry to Sorrento. From Sorrento to Salerno, I want to ride the SITA bus and also the ferry. From Salerno I plan to take a train back to Naples. In terns of scenic beauty, I am not sure which parts of the Sorrento to Salerno trip should I do by bus and which ones by ferry? Also if presume that if one does the trip in reverse (Salerno to Sorrento), the crowds on the bus would be lesser. However, in this case, as the bus would be on the lane closer to the cliffs and not the one closer to the sea, would I see less of the scenic beauty of the coast?

IMO that sounds like a lot to do in one day, but I'll let others better versed in the area speak to that more specifically!
As for the views from the bus, while you're correct that going towards Sorrento you'll be on the "inside" of the road, if you have a window seat on the driver's side, you'll still have plenty of opportunity to see the sea: the road twists and turns, plus except when there's a bus passing in the opposite direction, you'll be sighting above the car traffic and most buildings (built down the slope). You'll also be heading towards the Bay of Naples and Vesuvius, instead of having that behind you...
I don't know about the bus in Salerno, but there is a Sita bus terminal in Amalfi from where you could commence your return to Sorrento. You'd just want to make sure you're front enough in the queue to board where you'll get the window seat you want.
Regardless, in either direction the bus will quickly get very crowded!
The view from the ferry will, of course, be entirely different - at the base of those cliffs, looking up at the dwellings hugging the rocks and the ribbon of road above.
In my opion the Blue Grotto is a waste of time. You switch boats several times and each person wants a tip. Then you're in a little row boat and the guy sings for you. All you see is a bit of blue light down in the water.
Now, the rest of the island is beautiful. I would spend my time walking around above the marina.
