I have been there twice and think it's easiest by bus. You can catch the train from Rome to Naples then on to Sorrento then buses along the Amalfi coast. Traffic is usually heavy with narrow winding roads, nowhere to pull over and blind corners. Some people like to drive but not us. Buses can get quite full but they are cheap and you can watch the view instead of the road.
