Amalfi Coast

Just starting to research Amalfi trip about 3-4 days in July with my 15 year old...quick questions please and thank you!

1. Is it ok to see the Amalfi coast and just have 1 base location. I will have about 3-4 days and I'd prefer not to relocate.
2. Looking for a high end boutique hotel with a view
3. What is the best way to get around to see Amalfi?
4. Dumb question-is it stupid packed?
THANK YOU!!

1. Depends. What do you want to see and do? If you want to visit Pompeii, you might have to factor that in for your location.
2. Can't help--but think about choice of town first.
3. Depends. Buses and boats, usually, but it depends on which town. To get to Ravello, buses or cars. Would not want a car in July though.
4. Yes. Stupid packed.

3. For me, boats. I find the busses too unreliable and they make me motion sick. Of course, to go up to Ravello, you'll need a bus or taxi.

With only 3-4 days you will want not want to change locations. le Sirenuse in Positano is high end with wonderful views. Monastero Santa Rosa incredible views and an amazing spa but is more out of the way and may not be great for the 15 yr old. They do have a free shuttle to Amalfi.

Jdurham, I really enjoyed Amalfi as a base and can recommend the Hotel Marina Riviera, www.marinariviera.it, five minutes walk from the center, great view over the town and up the coast and excellent hospitality. Wifi was problematic in my room but fine in rooms closer to reception. Easy to daytrip to Positano by ferry. I took the local bus to and from Ravello (recommend an early start here--the buses become standing room only fast).

Highly recommend le Sirenuse in Positano. Views are amazing....hotel is fabulous! Great area for walking around....we took a day trip to Capri on a boat. I have also spent time in Ravello which is wonderful and gorgeous, but not as easy to get to things.

Amalfi town, Positano and Ravello are the larger villages on the Amalfi coast. Ravello is up high off the coast but with marvelous views.

Other sights in the area, like Sorrento, Pompeii, and Herculaneum are not on the Amalfi coast but around the corner on the Gulf of Naples. And Capri is an island off the aforementioned corner.

July is an extremely busy time on the AC, hence the crowded buses. But buses and boats are the only way to get around. Driving is greatly discouraged. Crowded narrow roads, buses that have to back up to get around curves, expensive, rare parking.

jdurham: You now have two separate inquiries going about your trip to the Amalfi coast. Suggest you just use one. I just posted earlier on your newer post.
