My wife and I will be touring the Amalfi Coast 1 week from September 18, 2001. We would like to learn something of the local wine production. Can someone give us names of wineries to visit, and will the harvest be at that time?
Thanks
Tony

This region's (Campania)best wine is Taurasi, which is a red made from Aglianico. It's made in the hills near the town of Avellino and is Southern Italy's 1st DOCG wine (Italy's top classification, with only approximately 18 wines having this). Taurasi gets better with age. The two leading producers are Feudi di San Gregorio and Mastroberadino. Also from Avellino comes Fiano di Avellino,a white made from Fiano, a fine white variety. Another white is Greco di Tufo.
If you try Mastroberardino wine's I highly recommend Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio (Tears of Christ). It's an outstanding white (for my palate).
I hope this starts your search, I do not know directions to their wineries, or if they are open for tours. But hopefully Mastroberardino is, I'll be in the Campania Region (Sorrento) as of the 23rd of September, maybe we'll bump into each other over a glass of wine.
Have a great trip.
