Am I nuts?

Ok, am I nuts for going to Salzburg, in about two weeks for 5 days, during the big Mozart celebration? Also, is basing myself and my husband in the Old town a good decision?

You are not nuts, especially if you like Mozart. Staying in the old city is a good idea, if you don't have a car. If you have a car, check with the hotel about parking.

You may be disappointed if you haven't tried to get tickets to some of the events.

You're only nuts if you don't like Mozart. It sounds like a wonderful way to spend 5 days to me.

Oh, I'm sorry if I sounded inconsiderate, -- I didn't mean to sound that way. It's just that I tried to get this trip off the gound last year and because we were planning on going standby on planes at the end of July and August, everything was filling up.

We do have a hotel and I just keep checking the loads on UA planes (some look promising and some don't). So, it's like we can't really make concrete plans for shows, dinners, tours until we actually get there. If we do, we can lose a lot of money if we don't actually get on the plane. Already with the Euro exchange, it's like we are paying 1/3 more for everything. I do love Mozart, beautiful scenery, the Sound of Music, and (Samantha Brown Travel), and so I think we should go ahead with this trip.

Sorry, Rex, but I feel like I'm going nuts for all the "homework" and time on the computer I'm giving this. (I'll need a vacation when the time actually comes.) Oh, and the added job of finding train trips to and from Munich to Salzburg to make our flight connections. That's all it is.

I am excited, but worried.

Not nuts. I suspect the question cmae up because there are people who avoid local celebrations etc as "too crowded". I'm in the other camp. It's crowded because the event is indeed special and worth extra effort it take to find hotel etc. go for it!

Princess, do you mean that you and your husband are flying standby to Europe from the US?

A big NO. We just got back from there two weeks ago (seems like yesterday) and it was wonderful. Had some crowds but not worse than usual. Attended several Mozart concerts including one by the Salzburg Chamber Quartet in the Salzburg Fortress (music matched the wonderful view at sunset). There were lots of impromptu concerts by various musicians in the city's numerous plazas. Enjoyable in everyway and was one of our favorite places on our trip (also went to Germany and Czech Republic).

I don't think you're making a bad decision staying in center of old town. We usually prefer that, but this time stayed a few miles outside of the city and didn't regret it at all. Stayed at the Grunauer Hof (see www.gruenauerhof.com for more info). It was close to perfect - wonderful food, great accommodations with views of the Bavarian Alps, and a staff that was top notch. Bus into town left from front of hotel every 30 minutes and took about 15 minutes. If you have a car, I understand parking at the hotel is free.

Whether you stay in city center or not, you won't regret the trip. Have a wonderful time.
