Alsace Suggestions

Hello,

I'm planning a trip to Alsace. I will be there for 5 days in early August.

I will be staying near Colmar, and plan to visit Colmar, Strasbourg, as well as crossing into Germany to see Freiburg.

This leaves me with a free day or two to do something else outside these cities. I would appreciate if you could give suggestions of things that would be worth going to/seeing (France or Germany)

Maybe a nice drive or a vineyard with good wine that i could buy.

Thanks!

We really enjoyed our visit to Haut Koenigsbourg. We spent a few hours exploring on our own and then had a great lunch in the restaurant. Here is the website:

We also enjoyed just driving the little roads that meander through the vineyards and connect the towns, while stopping to walk around town each for a little while. We visited a couple wineries and purchased some great wine. That, along with the castle, can easily take a day. Equisheim is a great little town to visit also.

We spent a week in Riquewihr, doing day trips, and in addition to Haut Koenigsbourg and Colmar, we really enjoyed Kaysersberg and Ribeauville.

I vote for a visit to all of the above mentioned villages and the castle - or what you can fit it.
Driving between the little towns is lovely the countryside is spectacular, and colourful towns beautiful.

All above are good suggestions. My late husband and I stayed in Colmar at the Hotel Romantique and loved their restaurant over looking the canal. The wine route is worth the time. My favorite restaurant was Au Auberge De L'íll in Illhaeuse.
About 17K from Colmar.

Where exactly does the route go? (Where does it start/end? Which towns does it pass through?)

You are welcome. My joining Fodors back in '04 was when we were first deciding where in France to visit after going to Paris. We went to Strasbourg for several nights and took a day trip to Obernai and we just fell in love with the Alsace!
