alpine tour departing 10/3-what to pack

We're taking a Trafalgar tour of the alps of Italy, Austria, France, Germany, & Switzerland, departing 10/3-10/14. I'm guessing it will be cold, but how cold? Any packing suggestions? Thanks!

Well it will depend on the elevation - I suspect most of the tour will be at lower elevations - base cities like St. Moritz, Interlaken, Lucerne, etc that are not that high up and will have cool but not really cold weather IME - but bring something really warm for the summits - like the Jungfraujoch near Interlaken - average high in summer is 32 F!

expect wet weather at this time of year north of the Alps especially IME.

topping - means to top so your thread rises out of Fodors black hole and others can see the title readily and comment. We have some Swiss Fodorites like neckervd who would more authoritatively answer this question than me - but I have been in Switzerland during October several times and the weather can be very variable - cool and rainy or nice and warm but not real hot.

Dress in layers and invest in some long underwear. It should wick moisture away from your skin while keeping you warm because you'll be in and out of warm and cold situations each day. Warm hotel, warm bus or train, cold outdoor sightseeing. Many people like silk underwear because it's thin and doesn't add much bulk to your clothing, but it has little to no moisture wicking properties. IMO, a better choice is underwear engineered for active sports like skiing, winter running, etc. Many underwear tops (esp. SmartWool) look nice enough to be outerwear.

If hiking in sun in sun out weather layering is great - pullon when sun goes under take off when sun ops out!

But as PalenQ pointed out... it depends on the elevation. If I'm looking at the right Trafalgar tour, not many days are at high elevations. You won't need long underwear in October for most of this itinerary:
