Alpenrose or Bellevue in Wengen

Hi all

Wengen it is. Now, to find the hotel.

Which of the above two mentioned would be your choice and why? Or, is there another one you like even better?

My Dad is ambulatory but I'd like to minimize extra walking given his knee and that we will be on the tail end of a two week trip which will be almost car-free.

Thank you

There is a very steep walk from the Alpenrose into the town area - and the foyer/lounge area of the hotel has small sets of steps.

Can't recall the Bellevue, but do remember the Sunstar was on the level in the main street and think the Schoenegg might be near the station area too - hope others can help.

It is a pleasant town to walk around and the main street area is reasonably level and not busy!

Hi flygirl,

I've stayed at the Alpenrose twice and like the place a lot. It's been in the same family for 100 years, and they have a photo album showing how the hotel has changed, with photos of the family members too. Now, the wife runs the front desk, the husband is a chef who runs the kitchen, and their two daughters are off studying the hotel business. It's a very cozy atmosphere.

Both times I was there, it was ski season, and the hotel was full of British folks; apparently it has becme a fixture for some of the UK ski groups.

Two things I particularly like about it are the decor of the rooms -- warm wood and pretty fabric patterns for curtains and chairs -- and the views over the valley.

Yes, it does sit downhill from the main part of town. But the hotel does naturally have an electric van and will meet you at the station when you arrive. They also have a habit of wanting to carry you into town any time you wander into the front of the hotel! There was one elderly British gentleman who went on a long winter hike every day, but he started it off with a ride to the train station! Every time I left, they were running to the van, and I had to tell them that I really enjoy walking, yes, even the bit into town.

I would say to choose the hotel that looks the warmest and cosiest, and know that they will take good care of you and your father.

Have fun!

I've not stayed at the Alpenrose, but I've stayed at the Hotel Belluvue twice, although not recently. It's my hotel of choice in Wengen, but getting there involves a walk, and a section of it is a wee bit steep.

The hotel will collect you in their electric cart at the station and transport your luggage. You might write the hotel and see if they can help you and your dad get to/from the hotel during your stay as well. I've found the owners to be most accommodating.

I like the Belluvue because it's a well run, family owned hotel. It's situated in a brilliant location on a hill overlooking Wengen and offers fantastic views of the Jungfrau from the dining room. The hotel is a traditional Swiss chalet. We found it spotless and well maintained. They have good meals in the evening if you opt for half board. The corner unit on the second floor offers spectacular views of the Jungfrau from the bed.

Thanks for the advice! If the electric car were available most of the time that would be great. The Schoenegg hotel looks great too.

Hi again

I just heard back from the Bellevue.

They state in the email:

"Only a few walking minutes away from Wengen railway station and the village centre / Männlichen cable car."

Does this mean 5 walking minutes, or more like 20? They also mention they'd pick us up at the train station for 15CHF.

This is a strange question to ask, but I'll ask anyway. In any of the above hotels, were there any funny smells? We stayed at the Hotel Meisser in Guarda a few years ago - highly recommended here and not cheap - but in the halls especially you couldn't quite shake the smell of old sweat. I can't describe it any other way. I assume because it was a skiing and hiking hotel. Lovely hotel, lovely location, clean and comfortable - funny smell.

Sorry to hear the Bellevue now charges for pick-up. Those treks to/from the hotel could get expensive at 15 CHF a pop. I looked up my trip report for the last time we stayed at the Bellevue and I'd written that it was a 5-7 minute walk to the station. You turn left when leaving the station, walk through the village and work your way up a small hill. As hills go, it's not as steep as some in Wengen, but it is a hill.

I don't remember any funny smells, but I know what you mean because we once stayed in a hotel in Germany that smelled very funky.

I think I would be looking at the Schonegg rather than hoping that a van is ready and waiting should you need it - or worse still having to pay for it.

Haven't stayed at the Bellevue, but I love their website We checked it out last time and it is way at the end of the village---mostly a level walk but one steepish section as Melnq8 says. Probably not a good choice. And the Alpenrose, while lovely, is down a very steep hill from the center.

I think Schoenegg would be a good choice. They are much loved by many on Tripadvisor.

The Caprice Hotel is VERY close to the cog train station.
(probably 100 yards) and is a lovely hotel, wonderful hosts, great food and beautiful views.
We saw it on a day trip and it would require a minium of walking from the station,,, My cousin stayed 5 days at the Caprice and she and her friend were treated "royally" and couldn't have been more pleased.

Keith and I are staying at the Belluvue Hotel when we are in Wengen in August. It was recommended to us.

I just hope that the electric cart can take all my Louis Vuitton trunks up that hill.

I still haven't decided if I am going to wear my Blackglama up to the Jungfraujoch.

All these decisions are just so dreadful.

Ugh! My poor Dad!

I just got done talking to various family members. Dad was riding a bike tonight and took a fall. Landed on his bad knee and also his hip took some of the fall. He's in hospital right now and they are trying to figure out what is wrong. He wasn't going fast or anything - but just falling even from a standstill isn't good. We might need a hotel that can transport him around now. I'm definitely getting the car for Lake Como if for no other reason to drive him down to the ferry dock from the hotel.

Thanks for the hotel advice. Still leaning to Bellevue but will look at others too. So glad I picked Wengen, my further reading makes this sound like the top-top choice to pick.

Thin, a mink at The Top of Europe would be tres chic.

If you plan ahead, you can get a taxi in Wengen. We did that for one evening for dinner. Then we walked back downhill to Alpenrose.

I hope your father is better soon and can make the trip.
