ALITALIA LOST LUGGAGE - ANY SUGGESTIONS?

after a fabulous, perfect trip to rome, positano, capri and sorrento, we arrived home on 7/19 at JFK and DH's suitcase never showed up. we had flown from naples to rome to jfk that day.
we filled out the form and haven't heard a thing.
no one at alitalia seems too helpful!
anyone have experience with this?
i can't even find out what their reimbursement plan is!
it was DH's entire summer wardrobe and about $500 worth of stuff we purchased in italy...(which i have receipts for)...
ANY IDEAS????

It happened to me once-similar route- the only time I ever checked my luggage (due to being sick-couldn't carry it- they talked me into checking my bag at Rome).
I, too, filled out the forms at jfk-It did turn up at home about a week later. Phonecalls back and forth with AIrline were just frustrating and useless in the end.

They lost our lugage on our way to Sorrento (via LHR/Naples) last year. They recovered and sent our luggage to our Sorrento airport about 24 hours later.

I googled and found their NY office number, called, listened to instructions, wrote a letter of explanation, attached Lost Luggage form that was completed and provided by Alitalia Lost Luggage ground office in Naples airport, made copies of expenses and incidentals receipts that we incurred while the luggage was being recovered, faxed (or mailed, as per instructions) all paperwork. 3/4 weeks later, check was mailed to me.

I just e-mailed this to DD who called from Tel Aviv last night in tears: MOM! THEY LOST MY LUGGAGE AND EVERYTHING WAS IN IT!!!--we're talking about her camera, with ALL her pixs for the last 6 weeks, her portable CD player, her cell phone, her JOURNAL!!! the leather jacket DH and I got her in Spain, the gifts she got for DH's bd next week in Italy, etc. etc. (you get the idea)...so...I need to be my usual CALM self and I assured her, that this has happened before and I'm sure it will turn up...didn't say what I was really thinking---YOU WERE IN ISRAEL WHEN A WAR BROKE OUT AND THIS SHOULD BE THE WORSE THING THAT HAPPENED....(right?)

But I did e-mail her this thread and just am "venting" now...but I do believe it will turn up somehow (I mean, she had to fly from Athens to Milan to get to Tel Aviv!!!, but that's another story)

artlover, you at least have given us all a valuable heads up. Now that it might no longer be possible to take cameras in carry-on luggage, it might be a good idea to download every picture at an Internet cafe before returning home. (I realize that at present cameras are once again permitted aboard, but I am wary that this might change again in the future, and at very short notice, just like the last change took travellers off guard.) Cameras can be replaced, but pictures....

Airports are darn well going to have to be more vigilant about luggage, in the event that checked bags ever again wind up carrying more electronic goods. And yes, I blame the airports, not the airlines, as a rule.

No artlover, you are NOT showing your age. Flying is not fun anymore..and isn't that the understatement of the year. Guess we had best get use to it though as I personally don't anticipate flying ever getting back to being fun. Take care, and I sure hope your daughter does get her luggage back.

Thanks, LoveItaly, so do I. So far, no luck, but am hoping since others here did that she will too.

Artlover, I remember how exciting it was to walk out of the airport onto the tarmac, walk up those steep stairs and enter the plane. You really got a sense of adventure as you left that indoor environment and entered a completely different one. Although it's undeniably more convenient in bad weather, the jetport has ruined that particular experience for me.

I'm glad you got your suitcase back. It's been over a year since we've asked for reimbursement, and nothing yet...and yes, I've followed up, etc.

mcnyc,
Oh boy, this doesn't look good, does it--for you or for DD.

I wonder, if the Alitalia doesn't reimburse within a reasonable amount of time, can you make a claim on your homeowners insurance?

Best advice: Don't fly Alitalia.
When they lost and found my luggage the handle had been ripped off the almost indestructible and expensive Samsonite suitcase. I was given a claim form and addresses to lodge with a claim number. I was in Palermo but the Alitalia operator refused to put me through to someone to lodge my claim, and told me I must lodge in my home country. So when I did arrive home I found that all the contact details like phone numbers and emails addresses wer incorrect. I telephoned Italy many times and got the run around. When I did get the correct address and lodged they replied after 6 months that my claim was out of time. Oh incidentally when I was tryingto get correct addresses and numbers they kept giving out phone numbers that were disconnected. So good luck if you fly Alitalia. You will need it.
