Alitalia allows smoking LA to Rome?

OK so now I'm sufficiently hysterical about all of your 'Beware Alitalia' postings and they might NOT police smoking too? Yikes!
My girlfriend and I are taking our 70 year old moms - who would be beaning the smokers with their travel pillows all the way to Rome. Any recent experiences? I'll take the delays over being trapped for 11 hours on
'disco plane'!

Make it easy on yourself, your friend, your Mom, your friend's Mom.......

Use a USA based airline.

Dear Well-
Had a USA carrier offered round trip airfare LA to Rome, 5 nights in a four star,5 breakfasts, one escorted day tour, airport transfers, taxes and service charges for $699, I'd have hopped on it. I can't find anything close so when faced with going and being upset vs. not going- I'll take going and feel forwarned.
Thanks for the response!

On and Inter-Alitalia flight from Venice to Rome last year. Seating was 3 and 2. I had husband and son with me so we took the 3 side. Watched an American businessman and wife get on board and she wanted the 2 side. He told her no, didn't she know the 2 side was the smoking side? They sat on the 3 side. What difference did it make? The left side of the plane (front to back) was the smoking side and the right was the non-smoking side. We all had smoke the entire flight.

I called Alitalia and asked if their international flights have a smoking section and they told me no that all their international flights were non-smoking.

Meg - That's like the Saturday Night Live of flights you were on. I had to admit - I laughed out loud.

Jo- Thank you for checking for me. Are you scheduled to go to Italy soon?

Char-
yes I am going to Italy 21st of June. I have read many bad posts on Alitalia but with 2 free tickets (thanks to frequent flyer program with Continental) I have to just go and hope for the best. Continental didn't have any open seat for frequent flyer miles so they put us on Alitalia.

When are you planning on going?

Char,
yes we are going on the 21st of June.
We are also on Alitalia using Continental frequent flyer miles. So with 2 free tickets I can't really complain about which Airline I am flying on.

When are you going?

I've taken Alitalia to Italy many times--there is no smoking on the flights and the food is way better than what you get on Continental which is dreadful (at least on the international flights).

one of the times i used alitalia, it was 1996 i believe, and "they" (whoever they may be) still allowed smoking on international flights, regardless of what airline it was.
anyway, we had equipment problems after everyone was boarded, so in typically italian logic, they decided to make everyone sit on the plane while the part was brought in from another airport and the problem fixed. needless to say, after 3+ hours in the plane, but still at the gate, the many Italian ladies on the plane were quite irate and having Nic fits. they proceeded to light up, en masse, in the area near the galley/bathrooms. faced with about 20 roman ladies furiously puffing away, the powers that be decided to let all the passengers deplane and wait in the terminal for the remainder of the repair time. considering it was another 4 hours before they reboarded us, i for one was quite happy those signoras decided to protest with their BUTTS!!!
