Alicante

Need suggestions for a place to stay in Alicante for a couple of days.Prefer ocean location or one with good views in the mountains. Any "must sees" in Alicante or nearby?

We only took a day trip to Alicante, and it was a very stormy day, so we really didn't get to see it at its best, but I can tell you that the Castell de Santa Barbara was fantastic. We wanted to see the Museu Coleccio Art del Segle, but it was closed--not sure if it's reopened. It's modern art (which I love).
The main avenue is very nice and pier is very scenic. There's a restaurant called La Darsena that's supposed to be excellent on the pier, but it didn't open 'til late (a la Esapana style), so we weren't able to try it.

the hotel spa maris.. or something like that is great, on waterfront and next to the known melia hotel .

sometimes you can get it on www.bancotel.com or at local travel agents for 50 euros/night.

goodluck.

the restaurant mentioned is very good. across from the hotel. darsena.

excellent archeology museum in alicante just received european prize for best new museum.

go to guadalest north of alicante outside benidorm , i believe, if you want a spectacular small village experience.

also, weather permitting, take the boat across to la isla de tabarca, and spend the day there.

unique place.

If you should decide to go with Bancotel coupons (which we did and were very happy about), and don't want to purchase books or 5 (which may or may not work out for you), your can purchase them for a bit more in any amounts through Petrabax.com.

did you check out the info on the website?
participating hotels accept teh pre-paid vouchers.
certain nights.. and seasons dictate whether hotel takes one (50 euros), 2 or three vouchers.

you can buy them in books of 5, online, once in spain, or at any travel agent, or here people recommend petrabax because they allow you to buy individual vouchers.

reservations can be made online.
careful once in spain. their new general phone number is one of those expensive "per-minute" ines.... similar to the USA 900 numbers. (900 in spain, OTOH, is a free number!)

i usually call the hotel direct, although some won't take your reservation unless it is direct through bancotel or agent..

is there any particular reason you need to stay in alicante.. or do you like this type of city more than a quaint ocean front place like altea???

north up the coast not more than 45 minutes are moraira and altea. altea very quaint and full of artists, and moraira a small town also with a port.

you should be able to get some feedback here about places to stay.
or make a day trip to both of them and stay down in city of alicante.

another nice day trip is guadalest.

so within an hour here or there you have alot to do.
in benidorm you can actually sign up to swim with the dolphins at marine park, if you have ever wanted to do that.

also some casinos around.

don't know what most interests you, but it is vacationland there.
and if you like crowds.. benidorm is a monster.. however.. it does have a lovely beach.

I'd recommend Javea/Xabia, which is about 80km northeast of Alicante.

going north from alicante you have benidorm, moraira, then altea, then you have denia/javea.. all this is the most attractive part of this coastline, which you will be able to vouch for once there.

inland there are some small towns and b+b's, casas rurales.

try www.toprural.com, you may be pleasantly surprised.

Why travel to Altea etc. when the lovely San Juan (long and beautiful beach with a view of mountains) and El Campello, pretty Market town (Wednesdays) are just a cheap bus or tram ride from Alicante? (about 7 km)
