Aix to Rome

We are in the early planning stages of a return trip to France and Italy. We arrive in Paris, plan to go back to Bayeaux for a few days and then head to Aix. Our question is how best to travel from Aix to Rome? Our desire is to spend some time on the Amalfi coast and then back to Rome for a few days before our plane home from Rome. The last time we were in France we drove from Paris to Bayeux then to Amboise and Orange, Aix and finally to Nice. In Italy we have also driven in the Tuscany and lake areas so driving is not an issue if someone thinks this is an option. We don't have that much experience with the train system but this is probably the most sensible option. We will have about 2 1/2 weeks of time to play with.

It would probably be as cheap or possibly cheaper than the train to fly.

Check out www.whichbudget.com.

AlpiEagles flies from Nice to Naples, so you wouldn't even have to backtrack to Rome.

I am not worried so much about the cost as what the most convenient method of travel may be. I assume one can take the train from Aix to Rome but not having had this kind of experience I was hoping someone could advise us.

It is actually a long way. You can check train times on www.bahn.de. Personally, I'd book on the overnight train from Nice to Roma, then check connections to get from Aix to Nice in time to have dinner before boarding the train (it has sleepers but no restaurant car).

thanks for the suggestion on the website and the having dinner before departure sounds like good advice.

Perhaps I didn't express myself correctly. To me, it seems more convenient to take the train from Aix to Nice and then a two-hour flight to Naples rather than an overnight train to Rome. Since you will leave from Rome in any case, it also seems more convenient to me to go there once instead of twice.
