If I do a free stopover with Aer Lingus in Dublin and then go from there to Edinburgh on Ryan Air, are the lines, etc. really long like I've read about on this forum to fly back to US from Dublin?

I've never experienced any unreasonable delay in checking in for a U.S. Bound flight in Dublin. I would recommend that you get there two and a half hours before your scheduled departure. The last time I was there Aer Lingus actually checked me in at the Business/First check-in because there was no one waiting in that line.

I flew RyanAir Dublin-London (Luton). Check-in for RyanAir was a real 'mad-house.' It's 'Open seating#39; They give you a numbered boarding pass: then, at the departure gate they call a series of numbers and if you have a low number (i.e., earliest check-in) you get to pick the seat you like.

Aer lingus actually suggests you check in 3 hrs before a flight from Dublin to US.

If you get there early, you should have no problems.

OK-tks. I am going from Dublin to Edinburgh and back, then renting a car and a week later flying out of Shannon to US. I was wondering about how long it took at Dublin airport on Ryan Air to go to Ed.

Also, how long does it take for Aer Lingus to fly to US from Shannon?

Check your flight info - it can take vastly different times , depending on whether you are flying to NY or to California. Your flight info on the Aer Lingus website should tell you when you leave and when you land and what your actual flight time is.

I don't want to sound snippy, but most of the answers to your questions can be found on the airline websites, and those are the answers I would rely on - not the word of anonymous posters on a travel board.

I am one who suggests a lot more time checking in on Aer Lingus from Dub to US. I did this in May, getting there 3 hours before the flight, and was in line nearly 90 minutes. There were 2 flights to Boston and 2 going to NYC area all leaving within a couple hours of each other. That's the reason for the madness.

As for RyanAir, I also did Dub-EDI on Ryan Air in May, and if you get there right when they open the window for your flight, there is virtually no line (we were 2nd in line). But the longer you wait to check in, the longer the line. This worked both going to and from Edinburgh. And my experience with RyanAir seating was different. We did get a seat number, but it was mass boarding, they did not do it by seat numbers either time. It was "run for your life towards the plane" instead.

The lines at Dublin can be pretty insane. It's hard during busy times to even figure out which line you should be in. Get there early.

Tks anyway Debbie but you didn't read the post. I know how to read airline schedules, and trains, and boats, etc. but they do not include the times, etc. at airports to get on the planes, etc.! Most airports you only need to get there an hour before but I've heard in Dublin, it's 3 hours and I asked about Shannon since we are coming back to US from there.
