Airline Ratings

It seems alot of postings request "Should I fly xxAir or zzAir to Europe." The typical response is "I flew yyAir to Europeand it was awfull" or "It was great, I will never fly another Airline". These responses allow no basis for comparison. I propose that responders rank at least 3 and up to 5 trans-atlantic carriers with minimal or no comments on why. This way future travellers will have some idea as to which are the best airlines to Europe.
My rankings are:
1. Austrian
2. KLM
3, 4. Delta, British (tie)
5. Air France
I realize that several travel magazines rank airlines using a poll, but none are specific to transatlantic flights.
CharlieB: I believe that Condé Nast publishes a rating of international airlines yearly - can't be positive, since I gave up my subscription to that totally high-end travel mag a couple of years ago. But in the meantime, what good are your ratings if they cover only a few airlines and are your experiences? Perhaps I'm not understanding the thrust of your post. Here's how I would rank airlines, but what does it matter, statistically?

1. United
2. Air France
3. Virgin Atlantic
4. BA

If you don't know where and how often travelers fly, what's the basis for comparison?

In this month's Conde Nast, the top 100 list was published.

Airlines are broken down into 2 categories: international routes and domestic routes.

Here are the rankings from 1-10:

International Routes:

Singapore Airlines
Cathay Pacific
Virgin Atlantic
Japan Airlines
Malaysia Airlines
Air New Zealand
SAS (Scandinavian Airlines)
Thai Airlines
Qantas
Virgin Express

Domestic Routes:
JetBlue
Midwest Express
Alaska Airlines
American
Continental
Hawaiian
Horizon Air
United
National
Delta

Any airline is just as good as the last one you flew on. Any carrier can have a nasty crew or a good crew, lose your luggage or not lose your luggage etc.etc. etc.

I agree with all of the above responses! What prompted this thread was the number of queries on this board asking opinions as to specific airlines. Indeed, since my posting there have been 2 such queries. Most of the negative responses have been based on a single bad experience and there is no way to evaluate comparison with other airlines. It is interesting that Conde Nast's ranking only 3 primarily trans atlantic carries while 7 are primarily trans-pacific. Their ranking was another reason for posting this thread. I also agree with the above post that at any time and with any carrier you might experience a miserable flight. Of the carriers I ranked all were perfectly adequate and there was none that I wouldn't consider flying with again. AF got my lowest ranking because the aircraft was an old 747 - my seat was soiled and torn and would not fully recline - hopefully a one time occurance.

I agree with Conde Nast magazine. Air France should never be on any "best" list. It should be at the top of the worst.

Unless every person who responds to the question of rating airlines, has traveled on every single airline, I don't see how much stock you can put in the ratings. What good does it do for someone to say that any airline is the best, if they've only traveled on one or two airlines??

Hell!!!!
If Conde's airline ranking is as this is:
Message: In this month's Conde Nast, the top 100 list was published.

Airlines are broken down into 2 categories: international routes and domestic routes.

Here are the rankings from 1-10:

International Routes:

Singapore Airlines
Cathay Pacific
Virgin Atlantic
Japan Airlines
Malaysia Airlines
Air New Zealand
SAS (Scandinavian Airlines)
Thai Airlines
Qantas
Virgin Express

Domestic Routes:
JetBlue
Midwest Express
Alaska Airlines
American
Continental
Hawaiian
Horizon Air
United
National
Delta

........ .....
then I would hate to think what criteria they are using because Internationally it certainly can't be for safety when there most certainly are some very "iffy" airlines in that list - from a safety point of view.
If it is done by asking flyers if they enjoyed their trip then I can accept those ratings but if its done with safety in mind then I cannot. Bye the way I am an Engineer who works with and on aircraft and READS the airline safety reports and incident reports. Perhaps I should suggest that readers of this forum should read those too before getting on a flight.

Singapore Airlines flies to Frankfurt and Amsterdam from the US.

British Airways is rumored to be very good for First and Business Class but not very good or just passable for Coach. The polls don't consider this.

Virgin Atlantic coach is supposed to be good.

American Airlines has an inch or two more legroom (for the past 2 years or so).

You can also fly transatlantic on Air India, El Al, Kuwait Airways, Pakistan, Egyptair, etc.
