Airfares to Austria/Germany

Hey, we'll be going to Zell am See next June and I've started looking into airfares & rental cars, and have been overwhelmed by the prices.

We'll be spending 1 week in the Zell am See area and 1 week in Switzerland. So, we can fly into any city in Germnay, Switzerland, or Austria.

Any suggestions for best city to fly into and rent cars? Any suggestions on how to get the best airline or rental car deal?

We have 2 teenagers--any suggestions on fun things to do in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland?

Thanks for all of your help.

Fly into Munich as it is cheaper to rent a car in Germany. Check mobissimo, orbitz etc, and of course, the airline websites. Autoeruope is excellent for rentals and airline tickets. Gemutlich is another good place to check.

Thanks for your response, AuntGrapes.

Is Singapore Airlines fine to use? Their rates seem to be a bit cheaper.

Is it usually cheaper to fly into Frankfurt than Munich?

Thanks!!

Where are you flying FROM? Whether or not a place is cheaper to fly into depends on the amount of competition among airlines on a particular route.

Don't know about the fare, but Singapore airlines is consistently rated as one of the best if not the best airlines.
I flew into Austria in June and rented a car. May I suggest www.gemut.com. They are great to deal with and will match rental rates from anyone.
They specialize in Austria and Germany.
Remember that you need an International Drivers Liscense when renting a car Austria.

Flights.com seems to usually have the best rates to Germany and Austria - I think they are part of a German consolidator. Don't hesitiate to price an open jaw. We flew into Vienna and out of Graz and it wasn't any more than a round trip.

Thanks for all of your help.

We are flying from Raleigh/Durham, NC and are happy to fly into wherever we can get the best airfare in Switzerland, Germany, or Austria.

Sher, Thanks for mentioning the International Drivers License--totally forgot about that!

Zootsi, open Jaw would be wonderful--that way we wouldn't need to go back to the same city and backtrack.

I'll get online tonight and check gemut.com and flights.com.

What do you all think about the best countries from which to rent cars?

I've heard twice (including from AuntGrapes) that it's much less expensive to rent cars in Germany as compared to Austria & Switzerland--what do you all think of this?

Our intent is to spend a week in the Zell am See area in Austria, and another week in the german-speaking areas of Switzerland.

Thanks again for all your help so far and for any other help you might have!
