Rome (I remember reading in the Chicago Tribune last summer) is the Number 1 destination in Europe for US travelers.Summer is high season too so if you find anything around $800 to $900 now I would buy it.Delta flies to Rome nonstop from Cincinnati,New York and Atlanta/American from Chicago/Continental from Newark.
If you fly out of CLE, consider CO's non-stop to London Gatwick (LGW), then via BA or one of the discount airlines to Rome (FCO or CIA). May be cheaper and relatively painless.
The cheapest rates I found on flights to Rome were through www.cheapflightsabroad.com on Delta. They were less, though not by much, than the rest of the internet agencies. However, I went ahead and booked through my travel agent for a few dollars more. She was already arranging the rest of the trip for me.
Correction!!! The sight I just posted should be flycheapabroad.com. Sorry!
Also try Farecompare.com and Sidestep.com.
