Airbnb
Please let me know if anyone has "Airbnb" to book a vacation rental and your thoughts on them. I just found them and I am trying to book a home in ireland and make our way around the place.

Hi Marie,
I haven't used AirBnB in Ireland but have throughout Europe and Australia and never had a bad experience. It's a great way to get to know local culture too. I'd also recommend couchsurfing, not quite as secure or formal, but good for the budget

At the top right of this page, Search the Forums will turn up plenty of recent posts on airbnb. Another search, for general news stories on Google or other providers, will show that airbnb is one of the top bookers of accommodations in the world and that a number of major cities are trying to regulate (and tax) its operations.

You should understand that you are not booking WITH Air BnB - you are booking THROUGH them. The owner of each property is responsible for the conditions of rental, what they are offering and what they provide. As with any rental service you must gather a lot of info about each place you plan on using - including recommendations from previous users.
Most hosts are legitimate and realistic but some are unclear or even deceptive about what they will provide - so research the property to death before booking.

Only the specific owner/property is relevant -- not that you found it on airbnb (same applies to vrbo and other listing sites). Some are great, some are certainly OK, some are not nice at all.
There is no way to tell if the place you want to rent is 1) in a good location, 2) worth the $$/€€, 3) really as it appears in the listing.
Maybe if you give us a link to the listing we can look for any red flags . . .

I don't agree with the above.
AirBnB is closely liked to facebook profiles although you can offer accommodation without having a FB profile.
The access to additional information on sites like Homeaway is fairly limited, there are reviews and the site does try to correct inaccuracies or kick off landlords who have shades less brighter than white. I ave have had 3 bad rentals through Homeaway out of about 20.
If AirBnB landlords open their FB profiles as part of their rental advert then it is fairly clear that you are renting from an average family with 2.2 kids and a black Lab. Course, mass murderers have FB accounts but AirBnB does give me far more comfort.
It also allows landlords to rate and provide feedback on those renting which allows renters to build up a review profile and strengthen the trust between both parties.
My main gripes with AirBnB are that the site is diabolically slow using an iPad and that they steal all your money for months and only pass it on to the landlord shortly after occupation has commenced.

One thing to watch out for with AirBnB is the booking fee, which is NOT, repeat NOT, included in the advertized price. I was just looking at an AirBnB listing for Boston, and the booking fee was $25/night. I decided I would rather pay the hotel tax (also not included in advertized prices in the US, but usually included elsewhere in the world).
Do read the description carefully. My only AirBnB to date was in Aix-en-Provence and I forgot that 4th etage was actually fifth floor in American, and the room, which otherwise was lovely - and just as described, was up 78 steps.

I notice the Canadians aren't trying to legally annex Puerto Rico for some winter sun.

One reason for Airbnb's spectacular growth is its payment scheme. Unlike some other rental agencies, the customer pays Airbnb rather than the landlord. Credit cards, etc. are accepted. Airbnb does not release the money to the landlord until 24 hours after the tenant checks in, so difficulties can be resolved or the client can leave without losing a deposit. I see VRBO/Homeaway is attempting to match this system.

It is my main gripe. Hanging onto a 100% payment for months as a service provider sounds like a wonderful business plan
Most Homeaway rentals ask for a 25% to 50% deposit with the balance due 30 days before arrival.
It's bad enough airlines raiding my cashflow. P
