Air Berlin Hand Baggage

Hi all, I had been researching information regarding Air Berlin's hand baggage/carry on. I was seeking what fliers on AB were saying and how accurate the weight/size limitations really were. I wanted to take a minute to post my findings. I just flew from Chicago to Munich (Via Berlin)

My checked bag to Munich was no problem either way. It was less than the 23KG there, and it was over coming home, but I knew that. I bought a lot of local candies, chocolates etc and was prepared to pay the extra 100 Euros for the overweight one way fee from Munich back to Chicago.

What was interesting was the strictness of the hand baggage policy. Much more strict that flying domestically here within the US. My bag was about 1" over on one measurement (H) but less than on W and L. I was fine with the size. They did however in Germany pick up my hand luggage in Berlin (to Munich) and in Munich to Berlin to see if it was weighing more than the 8kg limit. It was coming back to the US today. I had to move a few small things into my purse. Wasn't a big deal, but I figured if anyone is curious about this same topic. Perhaps you're planning on traveling in the EU using only hand baggage or something along those lines. Keep your weight and size of your hand luggage in line with AB policies. Just my 2 cents. Hope others flying with AB can find this helpful!

thanks for the report.

I'm curious on your statement about how strict they are for hand baggage, then you say you were 1 inch over the limit, then you say you were fine with the size.

That doesn't sound that strict to me, do you mean you were one inch over but they didn't care and you could carryon anyway? It sounds like they were only strict with weight.

I assume because the carryon measured less on the other two dimensions it was allowed on. Sometimes provided a bag doesn't measure more than all three dimension together it is OK.

Air Berlin has a 118 cm maximum with a 40 x 55 x 23 recommendation on bag dimensions.

I assume it gives some discretion to the gate attendant. I'm betting that a 6cm x 6 cm x 106 cm package wouldn't cut it.

It all started with Ryan Air.

The European airlines have changed their policy. Usually you can choose between three types of fares: cheap, intermediate and business.

The cheap fares come with very low services and you have to pay for every extra, often even for checked bags.

In order to make this policy work, the airlines have become very strict with handbaggage.

I'm not sure that Air France adheres much to the complexity of fare structures and handbaggage. Just a few days ago we flew home, JFK to CDG on Air France. The couple boarding in front of us had two oversized backpacking size packs and two carry on cases; they took over the entire overhead compartment for their row and then some, and they were seated in cheap seats in the back of the plane. The flight crew could not have cared less.
