After San Sebastian, where?

Solo traveler. I do believe that San Sebastian [and Leiketio] is the most "solo" friendly city that I know of. Catch a stool, and wonderful food is at hand. Are there other towns [Spain or wherever] that one can "grab a stool and have a very superior meal".

Catching a "stool" is for tourist. Donostia has a pintxos culture. Have a pintxo and glass of wine and move on to the next stop. SS has many of them, and not all are in the old quarter.

Weber, you can do the same thing in almost any town in the Basque area, and in many in Spain. Santander, for instance...

Most cities in Spain are like that. (I think of Sevilla as being a bit more conservative, but not much). Barcelona very much has a tapas scene. Madrid goes all night.

I suggest Antwerp as another place where you can find absolutely fantastic food in places friendly to "solos", and lots of English is spoken there.

Milano and Torino have fantastic bar scenes for the cocktail hour, with huge spreads of delicious food -- free! -- to have with a cocktail. Italians rarely move about alone however, but they'll probably strike up a conversation with you. In Bologna, the scene changes slightly because it is more a university town than a fashion and design capital, but the food is cheap, delicious and plentiful, and there are lots of singles floating about. Another Italian town for singles is Perugia because if its huge population of foreign, mostly English speaking students. Food is fun, but it doesn't quite reach the heights of these other places.

Oh, and Athens has a wonderful caffe/bar scene with delicious small plates you can order. But it's sit down.

Granada is one city where you can eat for free! With each drink you get a better tapa. In Madrid this never happens. Worth it, and a great city to explore.

In madrid it happens too. They are 'aperitivo bars' off the beat. E.g.

"La Rosa", Ronda de Atocha 30. Delicious potato omelet
"El Respiro", Calle Infantas 34.
"Rincón de Roque", Calle San Martín
"La Panera" , Calle Arenal.
"El Ñeru", Calle Bordadores
"Taberna Almería", Calle de las Aguas.
"Mareas Vivas", Calle Veneras
