Affordable last minute trip to london
I am looking for a cheap and london central place to stay for 8 nights in London. It would be nice if there was a quick connection to the underground. A double room would be nice and it does not matter if there is a shared bathroom. The dates are from the 15th August 2012
Any advice would be appreciated.

Can you define your idea of 'cheap'? It is different for all. However, Travelodge is usually in anyone's definition of cheap. It's a wee bit crowded in London at the moment, though, due to the Olympics.

Cheap is relative. To Mark Cuban, anything less than $500/night is cheap. If you mean less than $100/night - you're probably sunk.
Try lastminutetravel.com and see what they have available.
Note that just about anyplace in Central London should have "a quick connection to the [U]nderground."

Take a look at www.yha.org.uk. We stayed in several YHA hostels in 2007 and were very pleased with the experience.

I think "cheap London trip" is something of an oxymoron. I went to a budget hotel in London once. The room was so small that I could stand between the two beds, stretch my arms out, and touch both walls. At the time I was about 6'1" so that means the width of the room was less than 7 feet by a considerable margin. The bathroom was like a slit trench. I really think a big man - 300 plus pounds - would have to be greased on the sides in order to lower himself to the potty.

The London universities make rooms available in the summer when students are out. Try www.londonuniversityrooms.co.uk. About 40 pounds per night single although some are more or less. Some have access to kitchens or other facilities that can keep costs down. If you search for availability your dates the look at each property it clearly describes the amenities and has a map where it is.

This place is on my short list of inexpensive places to try in London. I think liking Indian food would be essential:

There are quite a lot of B&B's and small hotels in the vicinity of Victoria station. We stayed in the Blair Victoria for £55 for two including a breakfast of Tea/coffee, toast and cereal in February. It's a pretty basic hotel but the manager is very pleasant and helpful. Since we were staying for a week the manager put a small refrigerator in our room for us. It was nice to have a cold beer or fizzy drink when we returned to our room each night. He was always willing to help with reservations for tours or to give advice when we needed directions.
I'm not someone who needs a fancy hotel, a clean, quiet place is enough for me, but others might find this one too basic.
