Linda, you don't need a hotel near the Athens airport. Central Athens is less than five miles away, and there's a quasi-expressway that links the two (some traffic lights, but a divided highway; very high speed). Our cab made it from near the Plaka to the airport in under 15 minutes.

The nearest hotels to the airport are along the beach; it would be stretching things to call them "charming." We drove by the few we had considered while headed out of town and noted that they, too, were the same 15 minutes from the airport.
Linda, I just came back from Greece last month. I was there with my wife and two kids. We decided to spend a night near the airport in order to catch a 7am ferry from Piraeus. Having just rented a car, and traveling with a toddler, we thought it would be easier to be closer and avoid the city. We ended up in a $70 a night hotel in Alimos, with terrace on the runway. I don't remember the name of the place, nor I could recommend it to you. Planes were practically landing in the bedroom and the smell of fuel was dizzying. From what I understand from our greek friends, there are no real 'airport hotels' for passing travelers in the area. It may be better in Glyfada, as Boris suggested, since the place is more upscale and probably out of the flight pattern, but I still think you should get a place in Athens. Spending an evening in the city is still better than hanging out were we were. A cab ride back to the airport or to Piraeus, particularly early in the morning, shouldn't take too long. It is worth getting up 1 hour earlier.
