It is indeed charming. But there isn't that much to do once you are there. A tour of town will probably keep you entertained for 1.5 to 2 hours. Neat little houses. Apart from that a nice marina. Not much else from my judgement.
I am not sure how long the sailing takes to get you there.
Alternatively, there is a small ferry leaving from the Danish port of Faaborg that will take you to the tiny island of Lyö within 40 min. It is not accessible by car, though, but while not spectacular and very rural truly sets you back in time. The small towns of Faaborg and Svendborg are quite charming, too, and probably a bit more easy to get to than Aeroskobing, which is not to say that I do not like the latter - quite the contrary is true.

And I just noticed that the crossing from Svendborg to Aeroeskoebing takes only a few minutes longer (and is well under 2 hours). So maybe Aeroeskoebing might be more attractive and interesting than Lyoe, which I had suggested alternatively before.

If you like charming quiet- you will love Aero Island. We went to Aero Island in June of 2005. We stayed only one night at Pension Vestergade
http://www.pension-vestergade44.dk But, I wish we would have stayed 2 nights. We came to Aero after being in Copenhagen and found the quiet nature of the island a nice contrast to the busy city. On the way to the island, from Copenhagen, we stopped at two places on the island of Fyn; Egeskov Slot http://www.egeskov.com and Valdemars Slot - http://www.valdemarsslot.dk. We spent about 4 hours at Egeskov and 1 1/2 at Valdemars.
So maybe take a late ferry to Aero, then spend the whole day and next night there and leave early the 2nd day.
We took the ferry from Svendborg, Denmark to Aeroskobing. When we left, we took the ferry from Soby to Faaborg. Be sure to make a reservation if you are bringing your car. Will you have your car by then? I don't know if I would go to Aero without a car. The town of Aeroskobing is charming but what we enjoyed was the countryside and the sea. There are places to rent bicycles and posted bike paths but I'm not in that good of shape, so we did it by car.
My family loved the moraine cliffs at Voderup Klint. We spent several hours hiking down (and up) the cliffs and then just walking along the sea, picking up cool rocks and looking at beached jelly fish. We were always all by ourselves, the solitude was great. The sunset was to die for. There are old windmills to look at, (plus many new turbine ones- the island is trying to become energy independent)
We still talk about the odd museums- We went to Flaske-Peters Samling- a ship in a bottle museum with hundreds of ships on display all made by one man. We just had to go because it was so different.
If we would have had more time, my children would have liked to take Sea Kayaking lessons. My husband would have liked to go fishing. There are pretty old churches to look at and fun shops. Just bring lots of money, as with all of Denmark, it was expensive.
We also thought Faaborg was great. Such a pretty town with all red clay roofs. The "downtown" was just so cute.
