Advice wanted on our travel plans (mainly Alsace)

Our plans now are:

July 25th -- travel to Bruges

July 26th -- on to the little wine village of Nittel in the Saar near
Saarburg, stopping at Trier on the way.

July 27th -- travel to a gite in Ruiquewihr, nr Colmar staying there a
week.

August 3rd -- Ronchamp, Langre, staying in an old windmill in the
village of Foissy-Sur-Vanne nr Sens.

Then either Chartres or Giverny and staying in a B&B in Brosville
south of Rouen.

The next day back to Calais for the late afternoon shuttle to the UK.
Not sure where we will stop, probably Rouen.

Any advice on things to see/do/places to eat/drink in any of the areas
above?

What we really aren't sure about is Giverny on a Sunday afternoon
versus Chartres. We know Monet's gardens will be terribly crowded at
that time.

I don't guess anyone from here will be in Alsace during the week we're
there?

Thanks.

Doug

Doug, if you're out in the countryside north of Strasbourg, be sure to have dinner at this restaurant. It's inexpensive, informal and delicious. We were the only English-speakers in there. Our gite made a reservation for us, but if you go early you might be accommodated.

Restaurant Burestubel
8 rue de Lampertheim
67370 Pfulgriesheim
03 88 20 01 92
Open Wed thru Sun for lunch and dinner

I did a similar trip last year. Brugge, Alsace, and Black Forest. You can read my trip report and see my photos at

www.travelswithdiane.homestead.com/trip2001pg1.html
Doug, Just got back from Alsace. Stayed in Ottrott. Was disappointed with Colmar -- just another big city. Spent a few hours in Petite Venice.

Places we liked were Haut Koenigsbourg (a must see), Mont Ste Odile for nice views, and if you are religious, they have stations of the cross circling the monastary. Obernai was a nice city -- had dinner at Thai restaurant. It was wonderful.

Ribeauville, Riquewihr, and Kaysersberg were lovely cities. Follow the Route du Vin. Take a ride up in the mountains to Hohneck, west of Colmar -- Great views on a clear day. They say you can see all the way to Switzerland.

Strasbourg also was just another big city. The Cathedral was worth seeing though.

Have a wonderful trip -- I loved the varieties of wine.

Doug.
We just returned from a week in Alsace and have to disagree with the above criticism of Colmar. Follow Rick Steves advice and use Colmar or Equisheim as a base for your week. We discovered so much to see that we never made it Strasbourg. Colmar offers more choices for entertainment and eating than all of the other towns and villages. Get your hands on Rick Steves recommendations for Alsace - he is right on target. We found Requiwihr to be a bit too touristy! A trip to the Grand Ballon thru Muenster is a real thrill - largest area of wilderness in France and the views from 5.400 feet are excellent.

Re. Colmar: On Tues they offer a free folk dance/concert and on weekends they offer a computerized light show of all the beautiful and unique buildings in the city. The old town is spectacular - Eat at Swendis (opposite the Douane) and order a Rosti - eat outside and enjoy the charm and atmosphere. For a special meal(not Aslacean but French) eat a Au Petit Noack on 14 rue Etroite. I could go on and on but if you would like any additional info (especially picnic sites) feel free to email us.
have a great trip.
Toni & Ed
