Advice on Germany and Austria Trip

Jump to last reply

Is this itinerary reasonable? After reading about the Rhine Valley, we just had to include it so we decided to just do 2 stops on the Romantic Road (Rothenberg and Fussen). About us: we are all active adults and love the outdoors (our favorite thing to do is to just walk outside), but also history and architecture. Not interested in visiting churches, we don't drink alcohol, and don't really care about car museums (or art museums since the castles themselves will probably have a lot of "art" in them).

Itinerary for 4 (mom/dad/2 teenagers):
July 7/8 [2 days, 2 nights; overnight in Bacharach] arrive at 8am in Frankfurt then take train to Bacharach Rhine River Valley (10 miles to Rheinfels Castle in St. Goar). Cruise the most scenic part of the river (Bacharach to St. Goar). Maybe bike or walk along the Rhine the next day.

July 9 [1 day, 1 night in Rothenberg] Pick up car and head to Rothenberg (about 3 hr drive) Explore Rothenberg Ob der Tauber [walk around in the medieval old town, Nightwatchman's tour].

July 10/11 [2 days, 2 nights in Fussen] drive down from Rothenberg on the autobahn 2.5 hrs. [must see/do: 3 castles: Neuschwanstein & Hohenschwangau and Linderhof Palace and walk around Fussen]

July 12/13/14 Return car in Munich in the evening after visiting Linderhof Palace [3 days, 3 nights] Munich (things to do/see: English Garden Park [rent a paddle boat], Dachau Concentration Camp [10 miles from Munich], Residenzmuseum, German Museum [oldest science/technology museum], walking tour of the city: Marienplatz – Mary’s Square, Frauenkirche Church with views of Munich, market: Viktualienmarkt and Schloss Nymphenburg and the park grounds). Train to Salzburg.

July 15/16/17 [3 days, 3 nights] Salzburg (2 day trips: to Hallstatt and Eagle’s Nest (salt mines and town of Berchtesgaden), Visit Mozart’s house and the Old Town, Sound of Music tour, Hohensalzburg Fortress-nice views, Hellbrunn (use bus 25). Train to Vienna.

July 18/19/20/21 [5 days, 4 nights] Vienna [must see/do: attend a concert, Old Town Walk and Ringstrasse Tram & Walking Tour (open market: Naschmarkt for food), the Prater, Schonbrunn Palace, day trip to Liechtenstein Castle/Hinterbrühl (underground lake)]

July 22 Leave Vienna at 2pm to home
