In December we'll be spending a week at the German Christmas markets and will fly home from Frankfurt after spending two nights there. Our flight leaves at 10:30 a.m. so we'll need to be at the airport 7:30-ish. Should we stay the two nights near the airport, going into town by ?metro? bus? Or should we plan to stay in the city near the markets and take a taxi to the airport for our flight? I don't know the distances/time involved so would appreciate recommendations.

The airport is very close to town so I would suggest staying in Frankfurt rather than at the airport. I've stayed near the main train station for easy access to the airport. The train to the airport runs every 15 minutes and takes about 10 minutes. You buy your ticket from a machine in the station.
You might want to consider staying near Romer (main square) if you're planning to take a taxi to the airport. Do a search on Frankfurt and you'll find lots of suggested hotels.
Stay in the city. With the trains taking only 11 min. you are back at the airport much faster than all of the so called "airport" hotels, except for the Sheraton and the 2 Hiltons that are at the airport itself. Plus, in the city, you have the advantage of not having to go back to the airport at night.
A train will cost you 4.25 euro each, one way. A taxi will cost about 35 euro.
