Looking for advice on itineraries for a trip to Portugal and Spain this summer. I have seen some prior chains about Spain and Portugal but I am going with 3 young kids and don't want an extremely aggressive itinerary like I am seeing on some of those chains.
The only things set in stone are: (i) 19 days to plan (not counting days flying there and back, which I'm not looking to be productive on), (ii) we are flying into Lisbon and out of Barcelona and (iii) we will spend at least a few days in Seville. I would also like to make sure to see Madrid as well.
So with that said, anyone made this sort of trip with kids? Anyone have thoughts on itineraries or how hard is will be to get lodging around Spain/Portugal in July? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

Hot as hell. In the South temps of 100 + are very common - and you really can;t do much in the middle of the day but sit in a pool or AC room (Make sure your hotels and car have great AC). Young kids can dehydrate quickly - so be sure you always have lots of water handy. I would probably tend to get a beach house for a week in the south and do day trips - so there's not so much strain on the kids.
With a trip which enters in one country and leaving another, plus city based, you should take public transport.
For lodging look at www.booking.com
I agree that it will be very hot. Seville, in particular, is an oven in the summer, and Madrid can be extremely hot too - basically the closer you are to the coast, the better!
A beach house, as suggested by NYtraveler, would be much nicer I think, especially with little ones.
We are going to Spain in July and I have 3 kids too (11/11/13). Anyway, I'd suggest you stay 3 days in Madrid (maybe 4 with a day trip to Toledo on the AVE train). A few days in Seville (with a day trip to Cordoba on the AVE train) would also be nice. We're staying at the Best Western in Seville. Can't help you with Madrid since we still haven't found a convenient hotel (but there seems to be plenty available!). I would also plan some beach time... probably closer to Barcelona? However, I would definitely NOT miss the Al Hambra in Granada...that's a jewel and probably the #1 reason most people come to Spain. Perhaps you can do that after your Seville trip and before going back to Barcelona. For Granada, we are staying at the Best Western there as well. Good luck planning!
