Advice for Seville in September, especially for the Bienale de flamenco?

We will be in Seville from September 28 to October 4 this year, so we will be there for the flamenco festival. 2 couples in our sixties, staying in an apartment near the cathedral, on Calle Garcia de vinuesa. My husband and I have been to Seville briefly a few years ago and the other couple have never been to Spain, so they're expecting us to come up with ideas for things to do, where to eat etc. I'm not a great planner, usually play it by ear a lot, don't usually make a lot of reservations ahead. But I'm feeling pressure to have some sort of idea of a plan. Has anyone been to the flamenco festival before? Do we need to make bookings ahead of time, or are there free events we can find out about? I'm hoping Kimhe will offer suggestions on the best acts to see, as his advice has always been great in the past. Restaurant recommendations would also be appreciated.

We would also like to do a day trip or two. DH and I visited Cordoba, Granada and Malaga last year, so we would like to see someplace new. Would you suggest renting a car to go to Ronda or is it doable by bus? Any other suggestions welcome.

I'm going during that also, at least at the end just after you leave. There is a full schedule online as to the performances, I'm sure you would have to buy tickets in advance to get a chance of going. I'm not really interested myself and don't plan to go as I'm not crazy about flamenco, to be honest.

As for day trips, you can go to Jerez de Frontera easily by bus, I've done that before from Seville. They have good buses to some cities, as you may know. It leaves from the Prado bus station. HEre is info. It says you can take the train, also, which I didn't know or forgot. Maybe I took the bus as it can leave you off more central in some towns. http://gospain.about.com/od/andalusia/qt/to_Jerez.htm

I don't usually plan where to eat, either, and play it by ear, unless it's a city I plan to be in a while and I really know it well. I may have a list of restaurants I might try that I get from various sources like guidebooks or online, though. Last time I was there, I just ate in places I saw while walking around and liked the looks of.

Put flamenco and priest in Google, Utubes will come up which you can watch and will help you decide if you want to go to Father Pepe's church to watch him perform. that's supposed to be crowded, too, but what the heck, it's a novelty. His mother was a gypsy, so he's "possessed", or so he says.

My favourite flamenco dancer on the planet, cutting edge Rocío Molina (1984), stages her brand new Bosque Ardora in the majestic Maestranza theater on September 29.

She's out of this world, have seen her ten times live since 2007. Voted best female flamenco dancer 2007 and 2008 by Spanish critics, and she won the Premio Nacional de Danza in 2010 as the youngest flamenco dancer ever.

"one of the finest soloists in the world today", New York Times 2009

"Molina has genius: irresistible, all-consuming, all-powerful", Financial Times 2011

"as if she were sharing the stage with the ghosts of all the dancers whose art she has absorbed – and reinvented", The Telegraph 2013

On-line tickets to print at home (buy in advance to get the best and fairly close up seats): http://www.generaltickets.com/index.php

The night before, on the 28th, up and coming Patricia Guerrero dances Latidos del Agua at Teatro Central to the voice of the cante/song genious Arcangel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_HPVlcwKOF4

Whatever you do, I strongly suggest you don't miss the Molina night. Bound to be one of the highlights of the Bienal. Here in a homage to the greatest of all times, Carmen Amaya: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kGDxGAeG8xc

You stay in C/García de Vinuesa, and in #20 you'll find one of my favourite no fuss tapas bars in town, more than a century old Bodegas Diaz Salazar: http://www.minube.com/fotos/rincon/1...slideshow-mode
http://www.bodegasdiazsalazar.com/

Genuine Enrique Becerra is also very close by: http://azahar-sevilla.com/sevilletap...rique-becerra/

Among the now many cutting edge places in town, I recommend La Azotea in C/ Jesus del Gran Poder:
http://azahar-sevilla.com/sevilletap...ory/la-azotea/ http://iadorefood.com/articles/la-az...urant-seville/

I also recommend a visit to the Fine Arts museum with many of the greatest from the so called Golden Age of Sevillan painting in the 17th century. http://www.aviewoncities.com/seville...ellesartes.htm

Watch out for Zurbarán's works: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francisco_de_Zurbar%C3%A1n http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francisco_de_Zurbar%C3%A1n

Thanks so much to everyone for your suggestions.

Kimhe, I have to tell you that we took your advice and saw Rocio. Molina in Barcelona last year during the Carmen Amaya celebration. She really was amazing. The whole concert was fantastic, although there was a lot of dialogue and it was all in Catalan, even the printed program had no Spanish, which I would have understood, just Catalan. It was a bit of insight into Catalan nationalism, I think. Still, it was a wonderful experience, so thanks for that. We will definitely check out your suggestions for Seville.

Bedar, if we were in Seville for a Sunday I might be tempted to visit Father Pepe's church - that video was amusing, not what I'd expect in a Catholic church!

Christina, I like the suggestion of Jerez. I'll put it on our list of possible day trips, thanks.

And seeing Molina in the grand scale performance Bosque ardora/Heated forest in Teatro Maestranza would be a totally different experience than the short intermezzo she did in the Carmen Amaya celebration.

I will remember for the rest of my life the first time I saw her in the Bienal in 2008. Standing ovations for more than five minutes and the main flamenco critics were head over heels. "Baile's future is now": https://www.flamenco-world.com/magaz...0102008ing.htm
Video clip from the 2008 Oro viejo/Old gold: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_sV6R14Mrs

Again this time she is accompanied by two male dancers, as well as six musicians (including a singer/cantaor), and I can almost guarantee a highlight of your trip. Immediately after Sevilla, she takes the performance to Cannes, London and Madrid before she embarks on a tour of France.

It will also most certainly be a great night at the old world and quite spectacular Lope de Vega theater when some of the grand old masters come together in the performance "Toda una vida" (A whole life). With Rancapino, Cañeta de Málaga, the unique and inimitable El Carrete among several others. http://www.labienal.com/en/programa/toda-una-vida/

El Carrete (about 1940). Look at the smiles and listen to the audience: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYYLS2SDwE0
Rancapino (1945): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9bZZYMO2G4
La Cañeta (1943): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1zKRcOEJY8

Those videos are fascinating. I'm starting to get more and more excited about being in Seville for the festival.

Once again I have to thank kimhe for the recommendation of the Rocio Molino show at Teatro de la Maestranza on Monday night. An amazing, spectacular performance. The theatre is a great setting. I don't have words to describe the show, but as you predicted, truly the unforgettable high point of our trip.

baladeuse,

Glad you liked it, I was totally knocked out myself after the performance and I'm still somewhat shaken. And yes, very hard to find words. The flamenco critic Estela Zatania put it this way: http://www.deflamenco.com/revista/re...-photos-1.html

Another critic pointed to the fact that Molina is a great fan of the Japanese film director/animator Hayao Miyazaki, and that she here obviously has been inspired by his Princess Mononoke movie from 1997: http://www.globalflamenco.com/2014/0...bosque-ardora/

And you'll definitely recognize some elements from the movie trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pkWWWKKA8jY

I will be in Seville from 11-16 October 2014. Any recommendation for flamenco show? 5 years ago went to Auditorio Alvarez Quintero which I enjoyed, but a better suggestion? Thanks. Prefer non-tablao.

Top quality song, guitar, male and female dancers every night in Casa de la Memoria or La Casa del Flamenco. Only top of the shelf artists. Intimate venues, no drinks, no food, just flamenco.
http://www.casadelamemoria.es/
http://www.lacasadelflamencosevilla.com/

And here are some performances in local flamenco clubs (peñas) on your dates:

Oct. 11th: Manuela Cordero and Manolo Herrera at 9pm in Peña Flamenca El Cerro del Águila in C/ Tomás Pérez, 61. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NTrvCtcmpSo

Oct 12th: La Tobala and Pedro Sierra at 1am in Peña Flamenca El Carbonerillo, C/ Torrijiano, 25.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWmURoit2Rc

October 16th: Up and coming young artists perform in Flamenquería from 10pm in C/ Castilla, 94.
http://www.flamenqueria.es/es/

About peñas in Sevilla: http://www.sevillaflamenco.com/sevil...l#.VC7D2BEcTrc

Late at night you could go to El Mantoncillo in C/Alfareria, 104. Here anything can happen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09LZkX6h0dg
