Advice for holiday family trip to Italy

Jump to last reply

Hello! We are an American family living in Germany and I have just begun planning a trip to Italy over the holidays. We have 4 children -- a 13 year old, an 11 year old, and 8 year old twins. We will be driving our car. Before all of the warnings that we are crazy, our kids are actually really good travelers and my husband has driven in Italy before. But, still, we know, it is crazy.

I have just started the planning process so right now am trying to nail down which cities which nights and roughly what we'll do each day. Also any ideas for places to stay (suites anywhere? apartments? since there are 6 of us we always have to get 2 hotel rooms). We are ending the trip in Rome because my husband needs to drive back to work and the kids and I will have a few more days in Rome before taking the train back.

Dec 22 - 9 hour drive to Florence, night in Florence
Dec 23 - explore Florence, night in Florence
Dec 24 - explore Florence, night in Florence
Dec 25 - explore Siena, drive to X? (somewhere to use as a base near Naples, maybe Solfatara?), night in X
Dec 26 - Baiae, Pozzoui, (Phlegrean Fields?), night in X
Dec 27 - day trip to Naples via train, night in X
Dec 28 - herculaneum, mt. vesuvius, drive to Sorrento, night in Sorrento
Dec 29 - day trip Capri, night in Sorrento
Dec 30 - day trip Pompeii, night in Sorrento
Dec 31 - explore Amalfi Coast, drive to Positano, night in Positano
Jan 1 - explore Amalfi Coast, night in Positano
Jan 2 - drive to Rome, night in Rome
Jan 3 - husband drives home, we explore Rome, night in Rome
Jan 4 - explore Rome, night in Rome
Jan 5 - explore Rome, night in Rome
Jan 6 - explore Rome, night in Rome -- or leave for home on this day
Jan 7 - train home

High level itinerary suggestions would be helpful, as well as specifics for the cities (I'm having a hard time figuring out how to only spend 2 days in Florence). We're planning another trip sometime to other northern Italian cities so are pretty set on this main region for this trip. Would especially appreciate anyone familiar with this area over Christmas/New Years. We'll try to spend those days in places we'll have enough to do even with the museums all closed.
Thank you for any help!
