Adivice from experts please, Southern Dutch/Belgium German Borders
I'm off on my usual crusade to the continent in September 17 in a desperate attempt to drain more of the European wine lake. Tastings all organised. But I get onto the continent with four days to kill. Please assume I've visited the Mosel/ Rhine/Alsace/ Pfalz/Champagne enough times to not need to visit them again on this trip. Don't worry about booking rooms, I'm comfortable with the amount of time left to book stuff.
I'm looking for some interesting places between Rotterdam and the Rheingau. Ideas could include spas, art works, museums, flea markets, walking, breweries, factories, engineering works, folk dancing in fact about everything except football though Mrs B is now past canoing she does like a summer luge.
So far I've put together some ideas
Siegen for the beer festival
Frankfurt for the Rheingau wine festival and Studel museum
Freiburg
Bruhl for the Max Ernst
Cologne the Wallraf-Richartz
Worms (for the diet )
Metz for the old buildings and modern art
I still don't know the area very well, any ideas warmly welcomed.

On Koeln dont miss the germano roman museum next to the Dom.
Sept 17 is anniversary of start of market garden operation.
Maybe something in Arnhem / Nimegen / Eindhoven ?
Around that date is the fête de KA Wall Bue (it has another name but I can't care less) so there are also some festivities.
aachen is a superb city imho.
Close to liege you can visit the mines at Blegny Trembleur.
What else ?

hi Kerouac, I have drunk along the wine road, I have some fine fizz in the house from there.
What, hi, fête de KA Wall Bue does not google in English, another clue please.
P, B-B, my BIL took us there once, thanks, a bit too ancien regime for me.

Plenty of breweries in Limburg. Still independent and pretty good beer at Gulpener, in, duh, Gulpen. http://www.gulpenerbrouwlokaal.nl/en/packages/
Maastricht?
Nice area to visit altogether. A bit off your route perhaps though.
Den Bosch perhaps?
Also Blegny mine museum in Belgium is worth a visit. https://www.ruhrmuseum.de/en/home/
The Ruhr museum in Essen? https://www.ruhrmuseum.de/en/home/

Speyer is great too -especially for its palace on The Rhine:

But also a nice smaller city.

The tri-city area of Aachen-Maastricht-Liege is worth visiting, if only to say that you ate three meals in three countries in one day! Aachen Cathedral is magnificent and is also a spa town. Not too many vineyards that I recall, but I was there in December, busy drinking the gluhwein.

Hi bilbo,
I think we posted on the same thread where I raved about Aachen, so you may not be surprised that I'd recommend it. It's full of tiny winding alleyways that beckon and lead to wide squares lined by cafes. It's a wonderful way to spend a few days. Of course, there is lots of history there, with the Dom and the treasury and the Charlemagne center.
I also love Freiburg (im Breisgau) and was sorry that I had so little time there. It's just charming.
I've also spent time in Baden-Baden, and while it was ok, it wasn't great. The town is nice, great for shopping. It reminded me a bit of Montreux, especially the Lichtentaler Allee, as a faded 19th Century resort for the wealthy.
Have fun as you plan!

We do have some wine PQ but in very limited quantity. We also had some méthode champenoise but alas the crate I had ordered never materialised due to bad weather and even smaller production. According to what I heard Napoleon ordered cones to be removed when he governed us. But it might be an urban legend I never checked.
We also have some whisky.
Whatever we are quite busy with our beer our chocolate and our mussels (not all at the same time please)
