OK, I know it's technically not "Eastern Europe" but most of us use that term for the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, etc. Anyway, we're beginning to plan a driving trip for May 09 and would like recommendations for accommodations. We like to park our car and stay in small hotels, guesthouses, pensions, B&Bs in the outskirts of large cities, or even in nearby small towns, and take public transportation into the city.
Can anyone offer recommendations for this type of accommodation near Budapest, Prague, and Krakow? Budget is somewhat flexible but prefer limit of 80-90 euro double. Thanks.

I just helped someone similar to you with accomodation in Budapest, and they stayed in this place called the Agape Guesthouse, which they liked a lot. They also help with parking space if it is needed!

In Budapest I highly recommend the Buda B&B ( www.budabab.com/index.htm ).

This place is an absolute find, I can honestly say my stay in Budapest would have been no where near as enjoyable if I had not stayed here. Aside from the obvious fact that it is extremely economical, you are staying with two great hosts who really know the city and give great advice. They literally "wrote the book" on Budapest (The Frommers Guide). Even though I do extensive research and had detailed information with me, they were able to add to that by telling me places to eat, to see, and how best to get to things. The B&B is fairly well located, about a half hour walk from the river, but very close to a metro and a tram stop and from there you can get anywhere. The building exterior is a tad shabby, but the area felt safe and the flat itself is beautiful, extremely clean and comfortable. Breakfast was great, and you can use their fridge to store food/water, they have a computer and internet access you can use anytime. The flat is on the 4th floor but there is a lift.

There are numerous B&B on the outskirts of Prague. I've yet to stay at one that I would consider 'bad'. It's worth asking specifically what the price includes. Recently we got an OK price from one place and we went over there to ask. Turns out that the price didn't include breakfast...

So we went around the corner, got a better price and a great breakfast.

Also note that the prices for Czechs and non-Czechs can be different, so it often pays to be nice and polite and 'European' and maybe you get the local price.

Anyway, my standard inexpensive recommendation for a 'local' place on the outside of Prague is <http://grandrevnice.hotel.cz/> it's about 60 Euro depending on the exchange rate.

It's typically Czech, meaning the staff can be 'pushy' and 'taciturn' by American standards of 'friendly' and 'welcoming'. That's a cultural difference in behavior and expectation, and has little to do with the actual service you receive.

It's right next to the train station, and within easy reach of Karlštejn (you can walk there in about 2 hours or take the train), Koněprusy Caves, and Křivoklát, another great castle.

Řevnice is a nice town as well, with great veggies and good restaurants.

You will find my trip report at /www.fodors.com/forums/threadselect.jsp?fid=2&tid=35010692. We took a driving trip last year which sounds quite similar to what you are intending. All our accommodation is contained within the report so you might want to have a look through. Can't remember how much we paid now but most of it was not at fancy places so probably in your price bracket. We also stayed at The Bellevue in Budapest (after Fodor recommendations) and were happy with it.
