Accommodations in Donegal area

Does anyone have recommendations for reasonable but nice accommodations in Letterkenny or Glen Veigh areas? We're going to spend 2 or 3 nights in that area in August.

We just returned from Ireland....while in the Donegal area we stayed in Laghey. Just a couple miles south of Donegal....at a terrific place called Coxtown Manor. ((terrific food too)) www.coxtownmanor.com
While in the area make sure that you drive to the top of
of Slieve League AND down to Teelin Pier to catch a boat trip with Paddy Byrne....17 euroes apiece. A wonderful experience!! Paddy will even let you drop a line for a little fishing!!

The closest I've stayed was at a B&B inthe little town of Dunfanghy which is about an hour north of Letterkenny. The Corcrakes is comfortable, and was fairly inexpensive when I was there two years ago. The owners are great. I would certainly not list it as luxurious, but the view is very nice and the food was good. It made for a nice stay and Horn Head was a very short drive away.

When I created my web page I decided to evaluate B&Bs in a totally unscientific way. This is what I had to say about it when I was there.

View - 5.0 when the tide is in, 4.0 when it is out.

Rooms - 3.5 - Bed was not the most comfortable. The room with the view had a shower and sink but no toilet. TV in room

Bathroom - 3.0 - Toilet was across the hall. Comfortable though. Better than average TP

Service - 4.5 - Very nice service. We had a great chat with the owners in the morning.

Food - 3.0 - standard

Comments - This is in a wonderful and remote part of Ireland and the owners were so nice. They are hard to get in touch with because the email address on the web page is currently wrong and I had to work to catch them at home on the phone. Still, a nice place to stay.

Hope this helps.

BTW Bailey ... Thanks for the web tip on the tours from Teelin. I would love to do one of those. When we were there the weather was not good for a boat trip.

All I can recommend in Donegal--quite highly--is a wonderful restaurant in Killybegs called The Vineyard (formerly the Fleet Inn). It's right in the downtown, upstairs from a pub, which I think is still called the Fleet Inn. The Vineyard is absolutely wonderful and worth going out of your way for. As far as lodging, we stayed at The Bay View Hotel in Killybegs, which was a nice hotel, but most of you on this board aren't interested in hotels. But the restaurant is very definitely worth a stop if you're in the area!

Hello mexicobeachbum..We stayed at The Arches Country House on the Lough Eske ringroad a year ago, and were impressed by the hostess (Noreen), house, view, room and breakfast. Had a large room overlooking the lake below, which had a double and a single with a lovely sitting area at the large picture window. We will definitely stay there again, next time longer. Website is http://www.archescountryhse.com
Hope this is some help....Helen

MBB,

We stayed at Pennsylvania House in Letterkenny and absolutely loved it!

http://www.accommodationdonegal.com/

This was a unqiue experience and the hosts were very nice. Nuala's a talker but will leave you alone if you wish. Her husband Mike is not one to sit around and gab but if you do get him going he's friendly, too.

The Duddy's have run a B&B for decades, most of it here in the US. They moved home after saving enough to buy a place in Ireland. What's unusal about their B&B though is that every single thing it (bar the walls) is from the US! That includes beds, linens, their ENTIRE kitchen, furniture, toilets, all of it. If you want a king sized bed, they have it. Too big? Go for the queen. When we stayed it was the best of both worlds (we're 'in Ireland' but with a 'I'm Home' comfort feel to it.) Of course, now adays, power showers and decent sized beds are more easily found. Still, this is one nice B&B.

The decor is very fancy. Well, maybe not fancy, just "too much" IMHO, as I am not one to collect things that I just have to dust later. lol. Still, you won't find loud folks or obnoxious kids here.

I would definitely treat myself to another stay at Pennsylvania House.

Cheers,

Wendy

Wendy, we stayed with Nuala and Michael Duddy in April 03. I know they are recommended at IrelandYes, but had never heard from anyone who stayed there. She was one of the most helpful and informative hosts we have had in our 3 trips. We got a kick out of looking at all her "stuff". (I am not really a collector of dust collectors, either!) We were using vouchers on that trip so I don't really know how their prices ran.

Wendy & allisonm, I have stayed at Pennslvania House too and would stay there again in a heartbeat. I found the Duddys to be very down-home, helpful and extremely friendly. The house is over the top in a good way. Decorated to the hilt. Better that Nuala dusts it than me! I don't know how she keeps it so clean. Just spotless and so comfy. A wonderful place to stay.

Thanks, again, for all the responses. Any estimate of driving time from Donegal Town to Letterkenny?

mexicobeachbum, we always take the slow roads and stop all along the way, so can't help you there. Try www.viamichelin and then add a little time.
