Accommodation in Vienna, Prague and Dresden
Hello fellow fodorites.
My wife and I are close to finalising our German/Austrian visit over 6 weeks. We now need help with accommodation for Vienna (4 nights), Prague (3 nights) and Dresden (2 nights).
Our main criterium is the location. We always arrive in a chosen city by train, so close to the main train station is handy. Also, we like to walk everywhere if possible, so if there is acceptable accommodation near the main sights that is also welcome.
We prefer self-contained (kitchenette, fridge) if possible - but this is not essential. However, even if it is more like a hotel room, we like to have a refrigerator in the room.
Our budget is anywhere between EUR 100 - 160 per night.
Any suggestions will be gratefully received.
Thanks and warmest regards,
Steve

For Vienna, I would not stay near the stations. Whether Westbahnhof or Meidling, both are far from anything in the core of the city. We traveled to our hotel inside the ring by subway.
The Prague main station is reasonably close to the old town. I was just there last week, but could not find anything in the old town even though I looked for a room back in May. I ended up in Malostranská district.
In Dresden, I would not stay near the main station. It is not close to the center. I stayed in Swissotel am Schloss which is across the street (50yards?) from the Dresden Palace entrance. The price was within your price range. It is an ultra-modern business hotel.

Hi Greg, Thanks for your comments. I will take your advice and also look into the Swissotel am Schloss in Dresden.
We were also hoping to find accommodation in the Old Town area of Prague (near the Charles Bridge). Hopefully we will have better luck than you
Regards, Steve

Prague's main station is at the bottom edge of New Town close to some dicey areas. Stay elsewhere.
You want near the Charles Bridge, check out hotels on Kampa Island, The Bishop's House in Mala Strana (60 meters from the bridge) or U Tri Psiotru (something like that - it means "At the Three Ostriches"), which is about 20m from the bridge. Not thinking a kitchenette is easy to find.
And Prague is neither in Germany nor Austria, no matter what a certain Austrian-born German wanted for its fate 74 years ago.

Hi,
I am not sure if my post is a bit late, but here are a few other hotels which are located right on the Neumarkt, Dresden which is the historical center of the city.
QF Hotel, Innside by Melia or Hilton. They should all fit into your travel budget.

I don't think staying near train stations is a good idea in any city of some size. It can be okay in small places (like Lucerne I did it, and it was okay).
I also think you are being too picky about wanting an apt really, not a hotel, but that's your business.
IN Dresden, I stayed in the Dorint which I loved. The hotel was fantastic in terms of room size and comfort, the price was good, it has a very good in-house restaurant if you don't want to go out or weather is bad, and it is directly in front of a tram stop so you can easily go to the Old Town area, etc., if you want, but the hotel itself is quiet not being in a congested area. I got a room facing the inner courtyard for most quiet. They do have minibars, if that's what you like.

Hi guys,
Thanks very much for all your helpful input. We have now found accommodation in all three places and are very happy with our choices. Looking forward to our trip now - counting the weeks!
Thanks again and best regards,
Steve
