Accommodation in Massif Central, France

Hi. My husband and I will be in France between Oct 8 2012 and Oct 25, 2012. We will land in Paris and from there will take the TGV to Amboise, where we'll be staying for 4 days. From Amboise we would like to rent a car to get to the Massif Central area. I was just wondering what is the best place to base ourselves in order to visit Gorges du Tarn, Gorges de la Jonte and my understanding is there are also some great caves around that area? We were thinking Millau. We would very much prefer self contained accommodation, e.g. kitchen available. Also, is it possible to drive in one day from Amboise to the Massif Central area? If you have any other recommendations of what other sites would be worth visiting in Massif Central, please don't hold back. Thank you. Cristina M.
