accommodation costs - what is reasonable?
We have just calculated our accommodation costs for our 14 night stay in Portugal this summer (before heading to Spain for a couple of days). Is an average of 88 Euros a night a reasonable amount to pay for accommodations in Lisbon, Sintra area, Coimbra, Marvao, Evora, Monsaraz, Alcantarilha in prime vacation season in July?? I was hoping on paying a little less but still wanted a private bath! ! Most of the hotels/B&Bs include a modest breakfast. We've used recommendations that the kind contributors on this site have made as well as TripAdvisor. Are we in the ballpark?

Save a lot in the big cities bidding Priceline

Otherwise shopping Booking.com Orbitz AARP/Expedia Otel.com
usually can find pretty nice stuff in most areas 70 euros...
But you are in the range you should be there...

Hi. We usually book apartments so the pricing is a little different, of course.
In the far North we have paid as little as E40 for a small two star B&B and in Lisbon the most we paid was E95 a night for one bedroom apartments. With private bath of course.
Pousadas are lovely and can be reasonable with their passport program. It depends on the season and your age but July is considered high season. And I believe there are blackout dates with this program.
Without knowing where you are reserved it is difficult to tell you if the prices you have are reasonable.
If I remember correctly we paid about E60 for the D.Dinis in Marvao and felt it was good value for the money and a great location right next to the castle.
It sounds as if you have a wonderful trip planned.

Thanks for all your suggestions! I have to admit that this trip planning has consumed us for the last 2 months when we started to work on it(when we're not out doing our day jobs! !). Booking hotels, changing our minds about the hotel, then based on new postings here and elsewhere, changing our itinerary AND hotels. We looked at the pousadas and they all seemed to be more expensive than the places we booked. Let me know if you have any experience or opinion on the places we booked.
Lisbon - Sofitel Lisbon Liberade Hotel
Sao Martinho do Porto - Hoetl Palace do Capitao (pricey!)
Coimbra - Casa Pompal
Marvao - Hotel El-Rei Dom Manuel
Evora - Pensao Residencial Policarpo
Monsaraz - Casa Pinto
Vila Nova de Milfontes - Casa do Adro
Alcantarilha - Hotel Capela das Artes (pricey and recommended here)
Final night - Lisbon - Tiara Park Atlantic

We stayed in both these places and they are great choices:
Marvao - Hotel El-Rei Dom Manuel
Evora - Pensao Residencial Policarpo
In Marvao the hotel is very easy to find, you just drive through the main stone gate and follow the road straight to a large parking lot and the hotel is right there. We freaked out because it looked like we were driving into a tiny road in a tiny village so parked on the road outside and walked in. Definitely no need to do this, just drive through the gate and its a 1 min drive straight in.
In Evora it is again very easy to drive in. The parking lot is a but tricky to turn into because its a tight 90 degree turn, up a steep incline, then another 90 degree turn. Once you are in you can leave your car and walk everywhere in town.
The beds in both places were very firm, but we found that everywhere in portugal.

88 is reasonable.
Casa Pinto, great choice in Monsarraz, their rooms are sooo beautiful, the views of the sunset are great, Marvao and all that Alentejo Region is one of my favourite. Only a problem in my perspective, in July expect this region to be near 40º if not more and Casa Pinto doesn't have a pool.
Another option is Estremoz, I like this city very much, it's near Monsarraz, Vila Viçosa and Borba, has lots of wineries. The place I've stayed there is Pateo dos Solares and I loved their food http://www.pateosolares.com/index.php?LANG=2 .
Casa do Adro in Vila Nova de Milfontes is also a great choice, the owner is very welcoming and has always something good to spoil us.
Let me tell you this is one of the best itineraries I've found here.
