We were in Rome in October, and were delighted to spend time in Rome seeing the works of one of my favorites non-Italian artists. The exhibit is well-done, with commentary in Italian and English, and the themes are well-demonstrated, both with Vermeer and the other artists on display. As I recall, one of the Vermeers is in private hands, so none of us are likely to have a chance to see it outside of this show.
The one privately held Vermeer was on display at the Met for some time in 2009-2010 after Steve Wynne sold it to the private collector. It's been traveling like this since.
I've seen all the Vermeers in this collection in their home museums, but would really like to see the complimentary Metsus and de Hoochs here. Alas, a safari trumps a mid-winter trip to Rome....
How wonderful! It's always a nice treat to see a visiting exhibit, and not just the expected things, when you're in another city.
I was fortunate enough to be in Rome last winter when Steve McCurry's exhibition was in town. Very memorable!
