We are going to have an entire day--a Sunday--in Lisbon on our own before we start a guided 10 tour of Jewish Portugal. We are three active senior couples from California. Can you give me any ideas on the best ways to spend our day? Really appreciate some recommendations.

There are tons of things to do in Lisbon on Sundays. You can go to the Tile Museum (wonderful), Decorative Arts Museum, Monastery, Discovery Monument, and Coach Museum in Belem, Gulbenkian Museum.
See http://www.fodors.com/community/europe/loving-lisbon.cfm for some things to do. Check whether the Belem sights are still free on Sundays before 2:00pm.

or take the tram to the castle and walk down. Walk along the river to Belem, if the weather's fine. Take the bus or tram back
Take the train to Estoril and spend the day at the beach
I loved the on/off bus in Lisbon-really gives a good overview and the distances between the major sights!
