A Suggestion for the Fodor's Editors

I have a suggestion for a "Classic Threads" category on this forum. Similar to the Hot Threads on the front page, but more of an archive. The one that particulary comes to mind was titled something like "Name your favorite European Cathedral". When I think about Europe, beautiful cathedrals is one of the first things I think of. This thread was so informative, and I think some newcomers to this forum might appreciate finding this and others like it without having to endlessly search through hundreds of questions. (Not to say that the hundreds of questions aren't valuable... they are!)

I would like to see a really extensive thread about favorite European castles/royal residences also.

Just a thought.... thanks for listening.

Sandi Maier
Not a bad idea! There was a thread where everyone gave web sites that they used when planning trips, fogotten the name of it, but I got a number of excellent sites because of that thread!

Great idea!
Best Palaces
Best Park
Best Small Village
Best Opera House
Best Scenic Spot
Many to choose from...perhaps one a month?

I, too, liked the thread with the websites. I copied many of them for future reference. It would be great to see that resurrected. One addition I just found is:
http://www.virtualtourist.com/Europe
If you haven't visited that site yet, it has some great pictures.
Happy travels!
Gloria
Very interesting thought. Also needed is a section in archives dealing with classic tips that are timeless.Like packing, eurail tips, precautions or itineraries- which will hold true in all times.e.g.Skip Schonnbrun in Veinna if you are visiting Versailes in the same trip & are hard pressed for time.OR skip Brouge in Belgium if you have been to Venice in a time bound trip.
Like... Eurail compartments for 6 don't have latches from inside -carry a cycle chain & a padlock and don't forget to tie the handles from inside while travelling overnight;especially in Italy...& the opposite chairs can be pulled together to join as a bed.
OR The story of how my compartment was sprayed with something at night & someone tried to fiddle with our bags....Under 'Dangers & annoyances' section for everybody's quick reference.

How about one that let's everyone tell about an unexpected delight they found. I was thrilled at seeing the pastures of wild poppies in Italy! And the doorway shaped like a mouth in Rome around the corner of my hotel at the top of the Spanish Steps. Had that photo blown up and framed with the address and history of the artist that created it.

Sandi - - A "classic thread" will always serve its purpose best if it remains dynamic - - witn new info being added to it.

In that context, I am calling on all Fodorites to join the "crusade" (I think that Paulo is a co-leader on this with me) - - to get on with their plans for a new functional capability on this board - - to be able to refer to a specific thread by a unique locator - - regardless of when it last got a new posting.

It seems that we got a glimpse of this last month when they went lie with the "new interface" - - although there were bugs and problems (I never entirely got a handle on what those were), the single best feature got little or no attention - - the ability to jump directly to a specific thread. If every new (initial) posting simply had a unique identifier (the timestamp is logical - - this thread, for example, would be 2001.02.15.12.56 - - when Sandi first posted it) - - then life would be so much simpler.

And "Classic Threads" could stay right where they are - - scattered across time, and continuing to collect new contributions - - with a simple listing that directs new and old users alike to find them by their unique identifiers.

Fodor's - - please help us make this even further-out-ahead-of-the-pack the best travel site on the web with this much needed change!

Fodorites? - - will you join me in a e-mail writing campaign to Danny Mangin and David Downing - - [email protected] - - to move forward with these valuable improvements?

Rex Bickers
Westerville, Ohio

I'm of two minds here...

I think Rex's idea of how to keep the threads alive as well as accessible with the new format is great. BUT I remember the new format as having advertising and the nice new features were pushing the actual posts into a rather small space. Sooo.... I KNOW [pace Paulo] that this version of the forums has problems, but I'm in no hurry for the other either

I wish the editors would screen the message beforehand. They should hold back some nasty responses. I have seen such angry irrelevent responses. It's a disgrace to post them.
