A quiet(ish) resort with beaches and culture

Good afternoon.

My wife and I are looking to go away somewhere for 10 days in June of 2017 that has nice beaches, is relatively quiet, warm and has some culture to visit (museums, historical landmarks, stunning scenery etc).

Obviously the culture doesn't have to be in the resort itself, but relatively nearby so we could go on an excursion.

My wife is quite picky as regards food, but anything with chicken should be sufficient for her to tuck into.

If anyone could recommend a resort/town which has these available I would appreciate it greatly.

Thanks.

Nice? Barcelona? are the first two that come to mind. Venice, maybe or other options in Italy like Sorrento. Of those mentioned, probably Barcelona has the nicest beach, in it's crowded way but there are others down the coast. Nice has lots of culture but pebbles on the beach - but nearby are other options with sand. Then there are options in Greece - what "sings" to you???? Where have you been before? your question is a bit too open-ended. I love combining culture and the beach in Europe but many of the options are not the fine sandy, miles long coast lines like we have here in many places in the States.

We've been to Dalyan in Turkey, Tenerife and Hawaii before.
The latter was on honeymoon and currently out of our price range unfortunately.
We don't want to go the Canaries again.

I worry if France in June would be too tempermental weather-wise.

Greece is an option, but I don't know if mainland Greece or one of the islands would be best.

We don't want Michelin-starred style resaurants, just good local honest food.

Hope this helps.

Unless anyone knows of somewhere further afield than Europe which might fit the criteria.

Cheers

Sicily?

Not that I have been, but after recent British Museum exhibition on Sicily it's high on the wishlist.

Cap Ferrat with easy access to Nice and it's museums would be a nice combination.

You don't say where you're located now but if you're in the US why not consider Cuba (and yes, I know this is the Europe board). Now that US citizens can go, you might find it interesting historically and the beaches are beautiful.

If beautiful beaches are top on the list and it has to be Europe then the Mediterranean comes to mind. However the beaches arent the most beautiful compared to Hawaii for example, or the Caribbean. But Southern France and Spain may giv e you the ocean experience with cultural opportunity.

Donostia, otherwise known as San Sebastian, in Spain, though I have no clue whether there are "resorts" there or not.

I don't know why France would be particularly "tempermental" in June. Normally, it's a bit of a wet month, but it is everywhere in Europe, and the climate all over Europe has been crazy these last few years, so who knows?

Skiathos has more beaches than any other Greek Island, and I prefer them to the Caribbean. If I was from
the States I wouldn't go much further than Florida or South Carolina for beaches.

Thanks for all the replies.

I am English so I'm used to dodgy weather, but ideally I would like to go somewhere were you are virtually guaranteed hot weather.
I will look at San Sebastian and Cuba.

Cheers

Ah. Well, Cuba wouldn't work then.

Why not consider some of the spectacular beaches in SE Asia? Bali is lovely and the culture is very accessible. Thai beaches are justly famous - Koh Samui in June - or some of the Malaysian beaches.

It sounds like Greece might be a good fit - what airport do you live near? I'd have a look and see what islands are available as direct flights and pick from that list. For example Easyjet has tons of direct flights to interesting islands without having to go through Athens. Some places we have loved in Greece / Cyprus that might fit your bill are Crete (Chania - RyanAir fly there direct), Paphos in Cyprus, Tolo in the Peloponnese (fly to Athens), Finnikounda or Koroni / Methoni in the Peloponnese (fly to Kalamata), Lindos in Rhodes, Naxos town in Naxos, and there are plenty of other places in greece that would fit the bill. The food tends to be more accessible than people think - pretty much everywhere will have plain grilled chicken as an option on the menu, and most destinations will be within easy reach of both nice beaches and cultural gems. June weather should be nice.

Ah. Well, Cuba wouldn't work then.
I might have missed something that precludes the OP from going to Cuba, but Cuba is a popular destination for Brits with several airlines offering direct flights from the UK & has been for many years.

However the beaches arent the most beautiful compared to Hawaii for example, or the Caribbean.

I love the beaches in the Caribbean and Hawaii but I can't understand comments like this. Europe has some stunning beaches, esp Greece.

Don't worry about being guaranteed good weather in June, in Cyprus you get roasted from about April onwards. This year has been particularly hot.

Take a look at Santander. Many Spaniards, not that many others. Altamira Dos is on the next town.
