a nice Nice Apt - which one would YOU pick?

We will be staying in Nice for 4 nights in September. These apartments are all available and prices are all pretty much within 40 Euros of each other. They all have good reviews, too. One is a bit removed from the "action" but seems to be close enough to considered -- .#3

We will not have a car so we will rely on bus or trains to get around the immediate area [we will be heading toward a gite in The Luberon after, so this will be just for an explore/wander about Nice].

Thanks for your input~

I like #2 http://www.vrbo.com/174633, at the Negresco. I remember seeing that beautiful building when we were in Nice. Right across from the Promenade and the beach-- couldn't be better. You would also be close to walk into old town Nice. I did not look at its amenities, but love its location.

You can easily take the train to Antibes from Nice, and take city bus to the Rothschild gardens/mansion and to St Jean Cap Ferrat.

We loved Nice. I have a trip report with restaurant names, if you are interested.

I would choose #1 or #3. I like a real bedroom as opposed to studios and like some outdoor space.....doesn't need to be large, just a balcony to sit and sip wine at the end of the day. I would definitely choose #3 if planning to have a car.

Hi Deb

My comments are just about location. You can review the amenities of the Apt as well as I could.

For others reading my comments - I know Deb and I know a little about her preferences. She knows my preferences/biases also.

#1 - this is a tad too far west for and "ideal" location. I think the surrounding area starts to degrade a bit once you get a couple of blocks west of the Negresco. This apt is about 5-6 blocks west of the Negresco. I think it is also a bit too far away from the Course Saleya and old Nice. We like a casual walk along the Promenade des Anglais at 10 pm or so after a dinner on the Cours. A walk back to this apt would be a little longer than we would want to walk. It is also pretty far from the train station, if you use the train to get you to other areas.
I would give it about a B for location.

#2. This apt is located in the Negresco - a perfect location. Lots of beautiful Belle Epoque buildings in the area - in addition to the Negresco. There are a couple of mom & pop grocery stores within 1-2 blocks of the Negresco. It is also close to the pedestrian section of the Rue de France which has some interesting shops, outdoor restaurants (simple restaurants) and a nice alternate way to get to Old Nice - other than the Promenade des Anglais. It is about 15 mins (a guess) closer to the train station than #1.
Locatioin - A

#3 - Chimiz is way too far away from things. As I recall, it is a bit of an uphill walk to get to this region - but we've only walked there once. You won't be able to walk along the Promenade des Anglais to/from old Nice - unless you go way out of your way. The train station is far away also.
Location - D

#4 - this is on the pedestrian section of the R de France, so you won't hear much auto traffic. Pedestrian noise will be less in Oct so this might be a quiet place. Closer to Old Nice than the other apts and about the same distance from the train station as the Negresco. Short walk (1 block) to the beach & Promenate des Anglais
location - A-

no. 3 is in "Cimiez". The area is, by definition, on a hill, that is actually the origin of that word (Latin for hilltop). it's nice, but hilly

I'd go for #2. Forever after you'll be able to say "When we stayed at the Negresco..." LOL The hotel is world famous.

I live in Nice, in Cimiez right by your number 3. It is a very nice neighborhood, but very quiet. Walking to the center will take between 50-60, and it is a fairly good uphill climb on the way back. The buses run often in the day but are almost non-existant in the evenings so if you are planning on dinners out it could be a problem. Besides a Monoprix there is not any other commerce there.

I agree with Stu's assessment. #1 is a bit far. #2 at the Negresco is a bit better location but it looked like it only had sofa beds ? #4 is the best location of the group, even in Oct I might be concerned about noise though, but I didn't read the reviews.

I agree abut the sofa bed, not my favorite but since it is only 4 nights, thought location might win over the sofabed. Comments indicate that it is comfortable.

#3 is off the table, too far and if they aren't being honest about distance to center, what else might not be accurage?
===

Both #2 and #4 are top contenders so far. Thanks again.

Well for one, the Jazz Festival is no longer held in the park (last time in 2010) so they should update that too.

This might be TMI, but here are my notes from our visit to Nice a few years ago. We only had three nights there. We liked this smallish city very much.

"

For our first dinner, I had brought the name of a restaurant I’d found on Travel Talk, and the front desk agreed it was a good one, a local favorite in old Nice. It’s called Acchiardo, at 38 rue Droite in Vieux Nice.

We headed over for their opening at 7p.m., and were very happy with it. Really friendly and attentive service, very quaint and casual atmosphere, with a good menu.
I had a steak dinner, which actually included vegetables on the side. My daughter had two different salads. We had bottled water and a half-liter of house red wine.

When the bill arrived for 28.50EUR, I thought they’d made a mistake because it was so much less than I’d been accustomed to paying in Venice, Florence and Rome. But, no, it was correct. (We would have maybe eaten there another night, but found out it closes on weekend nights, believe it or not.)

We walked all over old Nice, then through the pedestian area to the promenade and took that way back to the hotel. It’s such a beautiful walk at night. The Chateau hillside is all lit up, the palm trees are lit, and the waves look so pleasant. It was how we ended each of our Nice nights, with that walk back to the hotel.

The next day we decided to take the short bus ride on the #81, to visit the Villa and Jardins Ephrussi de Rothschild, near Saint Jean Cap Ferrat. (The bus is just 1.30EUR each direction, which you pay in exact change on the bus.)

It was a nice visit, especially to see the views of the sea down below on both sides of the hillside. I thought the price was a bit steep, at 9.50EUR for an adult, because the Villa isn’t really all that interesting (sorry!), but the gardens are pretty.
There’s also a nice little café there, for a light snack or drink or meal, which was a welcome break from all our walking.

While we were there, a very strong wind came up, which caused quite a bit of white caps in the water below, and chased everyone in from the patio tables. The wind stayed with us for the rest of the day, but wasn’t terribly annoying.

From the Villa, we did the easy walk down to the port of St. Jean to walk around and check it out. There are nice boats in the little harbor, with cute restaurants and shops. It’s very tiny, so doesn’t take long to walk from end to end of St. Jean.
We spent just about an hour and a half there, then caught the #81 back to Nice.

That evening, we returned to old Nice for dinner. We loved that neighborhood’s little streets, overall atmosphere, and cute shops.
We found the Restaurant la Tapenada, 6 rue St. Reparate and had a very nice dinner. It was probably about 60EUR for the two of us, on their fixed price menu, with a bottle of house wine.
Very nice little place, with friendly and attentive service. They even let my daughter trade her dessert for a salad. So she had two salads to start, one after the other, and they timed the arrival of our main courses perfectly. We were perfectly happy with our meal there.

The next day we decided we’d stick to the coast and see Antibes, which is a short 20-minute train ride from Nice. We were glad we’d chosen Antibes, as it’s beautiful.
The sea wall makes a nice walk, and the Centre Ville is very charming.

We wandered its streets, shopped in a tiny clothing boutique, found a little place for omelettes (nothing special, but nice enough), then headed back to Nice by train after about 4 hours total. It was a good choice for a quick day-trip.

That evening we weren’t very hungry, so opted for the simple Pasta Basta, once again in old Nice. It was a nice meal, although not extraordinary. Good prices and decent service.

All in all, we were very impressed with Nice and the surrounding area. It’s a very pretty city, with a friendly attitude, sitting on a lovely shore. There are many options for things to do near Nice. We’d considered St. Paul de Vence and Digne, but with the beautiful clear weather, we were drawn to stay at the seaside, and were glad we did."
