Hi, my partner and I are looking to seasoned travelers for advice on our planned trip to Italy and Spain (Andalusia) in October. We are thinking of dividing our time amongst a number of cities as follows and would be interested to know if it's too much, too little, or is it about right? Please note: We'll be arriving Rome early-mid October and departing early November from Rome. We'll be using mostly using the train (i.e. no car).between cities.

3 nights Rome
2 nights Orvieto
3 nights Cinque Terre
3 nights Lucca
5 nights Florence (+ day trip Fiesole); fly to Seville
4 nights Seville
2 nights Cordoba
4 nights Granada (+ day trip Nerja)
3 nights Barcelona; fly to Rome
1 night Rome; fly out following day

Why not fly home from Barcelona? Look for multi-city flights home to Rome, Barcelona to home. The timing looks good otherwise to me.

I think one night in Lucca would be fine unless you're planning on exploring Tuscany and then add more nights in Barcelona. Or perhaps one night in Córdoba and three in Granada then another two nights in Barcelona where there is so much to see. Sounds like a wonderful trip, particularly the five nights in Florence.

Too much time in Lucca and Granada and not near enough time in Rome and Barcelona.

And even though it is a month you are going to 10 places and you will lose x amount of time, usually 1/2 day getting to and from somewhere.

Think about pruning some stop.

Lucca is only 45 mins from Florence by commute train. I might reduce Florence/Lucca time and just have the one base.

Keep the Cordoba nights to at least 2

You've not included Malaga....?

Suggeset you add time to Rome at the beginning and shave it away from Lucca & Sevilla.

Presuming you have already bought air tickets and cannot change them, your trip would go a little eaiser transportation-wise if you did the following:

Uppn landing in Rome, head directly to Orvieto, by train. Then return to Rome for your sightseeing days, then go to le Cinque Terre, Lucca, and Florence

Thanks all for your helpful suggestions!! Esp going to the Coast etc from Rome rather than from Orvieto (didn't realise the trains were quicker). We'll definitely have a bit of a rethink about timing and routes...
