A Month in Greece-Itinerary Suggestions?

Jump to last reply

We are just beginning to plan our spring 2015 trip to Greece. Our approximate travel dates are April 21st-May 21st. We are not locked in to those exact dates, but will need to return home by May 25 latest.

We would like to spend about 10-12 days on the mainland. After arriving in Athens, we plan on renting a car to visit Delphi, Nafplio, Corinth & Olympia. Of this 10-12 days, we would like to spend 4 days or so in Athens, but this could be at the end of our trip.

So far, we are looking at Crete (about a week), Rhodes 4-6 days, and 3-4 days on Santorini. We plan on renting a car on Crete, also.

We are two young at heart, adventurous and fairly well traveled seniors! We are not interested in a beach/resort vacation, but look forward to seeing some great archeological sites, enjoying some delicious Greek food, exploring the streets of cities, towns and villages. We prefer to stay in mid size towns or cities rather than small villages--we are easily bored!

We are not opposed to a dip in the ocean or a pool if the weather is hot, but we're not worried if it's not warm enough for swimming.

I realize it's too early to look at ferry schedules, etc; but we are wondering what makes the most sense from a logistical standpoint. We were thinking of Athens-Crete-Rhodes-Santorini-Athens-home to the US. Is this a logical order of travel? We are open to either flying or ferries between islands/mainland.

Thanks in advance for any advice--it's much appreciated!
