A little wine tasting long weekend France and Germany

Just putting together a 6 day visit to France and Germany and thought there might be some ideas to improve on it
17 Sept Ferry Hull to Zeebrugge
18-19th Bad Durkheim for the the first day of the second week of the wine festival plus a little wine buying in the Pfalz region
20-21st St Hippolyte in Alsace for the vendage festival 21st plus a little wine buying along the wine route on the Saturday
22-23rd Back to Piesporter in Alsace and the wine festival 19-22 at Minheim plus (guess what)
24th Ferry back to Hull

I was thinking about a couple of days in Epernay for Champers but the car might be overloaded by then.

Any suggestions ?

Sounds perfect - Prost!

Note that zero tolerance in France with driver's - with drinks driving road checks not uncommon - much different scene than the tolerant one just a decade or so ago.

Bad Durkheim - music to my ears. we were there many years ago with my german penfriend and her husband; luckily she drove cos the rest of us were very much the worse for wear by the time we left.

beware - they serve the wine in 1/4 litre glasses which soon add up. I would therefore arrange to stay somewhere close by, preferably within staggering distance.

after that, you will of course be right on the Weinstrasse; I can recommend going down as far as Bad Bergzabern, which I cycled to once in my youth, all the way from Herxheim where my penfriend lived. I still remember how sore I was when we got back. I don't know any specific vineyards to recommend but I'm sure that a few hours with Mr Google would bear fruit. I think that I would allow a bit longer in this lovely reason rather than rushing things to get to Reims but that's just me - I love the Pfalz.

We have a family house in Bad Durkheim (probably not accessible but time will tell) and I've done the festival and ridden Pfalz to Alsace, so I'm pretty happy with that aspect. I've been to Minheim twice and Piesporter twice but never in a festival and it was some time ago. St Hippolyte is new to me as it is in the Bas Alsace which I don't know well. Thinking about some Red from Ahr (only been through there once and found the whole road was drunk and there are no festivals that I can see that weekend).

Wondering about hotels in these areas or if there are better festivals I should be going to.

Yes I know about the dimpled mugs of wine ;-)

Thanks P, we don't drink and drive, should be fun.

well, you hardly need any advice then, bilbo!

I can't help about hotels in the Pfalz as we have always stayed with our friends, and i really don't know Alsace very well. So I'm not much use to you!

I think you shouldn't visit more than one country and stay at least 3 nights anywhere you go and do day trips from a base. You are going to lose a half day every time you check in and out of a hotel, so in reality you only have less than a full day of travel, since your first and last day will be a total loss anyway. Do the math.

Thanks ann, it is a lovely area.

Sandra, you know you are right, but luckily I'm time rich. Also I check in and out in under one hour and part of our holiday is the drive between these areas which are so pretty. But you are right it cuts into drinking time and will restrict us to maybe only 12 wines a day.
