9 or 10 days in Germany and possibly Austria / Switzerland

We are planning to hop over to Germany from London where our daughter lives. We plan to either fly into a southern airport and travel north, or vice-versa, depending on whether or not our daughter and son-in-law can join us. We will either fly in or out of Frankfurt, back to London. We are thinking that the southern airport will probably be Munich. I have been looking at the Romantic Road with a definite plan to take in Füssen and then head into the Garmisch area.
I've read that some people think the Romantic Road is too touristy. What about Rothenburg and Dinkelsbuhl? I would love to see Switzerland but don't think it is possible in a time frame of 9 or 10 days. We are also planning to take a one-day boat trip on the middle Rhine.
I'm just curious what people think are the not-to-be missed towns, churches, museums, etc.
We are most likely going to travel by train but are not opposed to renting a car if a rural area requires it.
