$818 flight to Rome in late Apr 09! Should I jump on it??
I know it's way too early to be looking at the cost of airfare so far out, but I just can't help myself from looking while I dream of my next vacation. And it just so happens that I came across what seems to be a great deal:
Apr 24-May 8 for $818.
I know that no one can predict what airfare prices are going to do. So I guess I am asking, should I go ahead and buy so soon? How is Delta's financial health??

It is DEFINITELY not too late to look for airfares to Italy in April 2009, as a matter of fact you are borderline pushing it! Airlines will be cutting a huge % of overseas flights come next Spring, so if you have SPECIFIC DATES you have to travel next Spring, you better lock in the flights NOW.
Agree w/previous poster; where are you flying from? London? San Diego? Athens? Hawaii? Philadelphia?
Rule of Thumb: April-late October flights departing anywhere out of the Northeast USA to Italy that costs less than $800 are a DEAL.

It is early, but I bought a ticket already for May 09. JFK to CDG. I got it for $800 and jumped on it. Maybe the prices will go down, maybe they will go up. Whatever you decide, make peace with it, don't make yourself crazy second-guessing your decision.

Ekscrunchy - No, I didn't know about those being holidays. I guess I was just so focused going after Easter, but before mid-May, that I didn't even think about other holiday. How big are they? My basic itinerary is the first week in Tuscany and the second in southern Italy.

hi, w'girl,
how much lower do you really think fares can go? after all they're talking about cutting flights out presumably to keep the fares high.
I'd go for it, always remembering that buying on credit card should insure you against loss, as would travel insurance.
May 1st is a big holiday in most of europe [the UK manages to postpone it to the nearest Monday]; I'm not sure about April 25th in Italy.
i wouldn't let that stand in my way.
regards, ann

Not that you need another opinion - but I'd sure go for it.
As to your question about Delta, financially it's as good as many and better than some. I wouldn't hesitate to book them for spring. Just keep checking your booking periodically. Changes in flights and times between now and spring could be made and sometimes you don't get a lot, or any, advance notice.

Great! Thanks for all the replies. I did end up buying the ticket which ended up being a bit of a process, since Capital One kept flagging it was a fraudulent charge. For the first time, I did buy trip insurance.
Yeah! I can focus on planning my trip now that I have to dates!
drf4848 - Thanks for the info! That's really more of what I was looking for than reassurance on the price. The best I was hoping for was something around $900.

Good job on the tickets! I will have to start looking for my own soon as I expect to go around that time frame, give or take a few weeks..
April 25 is Liberation Day in Italy and is a big public holiday, but since it falls on a Saturday next year, it might not have a major effect. May 1st you know about--expect that to be a big "bridge" weekend since it falls on a Friday. So public sites/banks, etc might be closed...but restaurants should be open..
