8 in Rome or Rome + Amalfi in June

Booked flights to Rome on a whim in early June for 8 days. Original thought was to just spend all days in Rome for a very relaxed experience in the city..perhaps take a day trip to the beach in Ostia as it will be hot. On the other hand, doing 5 days in Rome + 3 days in the Amalfi Coast sounds lovely as well.
Pro's and Con's of either option?

Have you been to Rome before? Italy? If so and you are familiar with the trains, I would head to the Amalfi coast on arrival and spend 3 days. End your trip in Rome so you are there for your return flight.

Good idea above !

I would make it Sorrento for ease of day trips to Pompeii and maybe Capri.

If you have been to Rome before, I'd give more days to the Amalfi Coast, and I'd try to avoid the AC on the weekend. If you don't intend to explore the AC/Pompeii/Naples area and just want to relax, consider staying on Capri rather than in one of the coastal towns.

I'd split it - how many nights would depend on if I had been to Rome before.

We have been to other parts of Italy recently but not Rome or Amalfi in over 12 years. So for all intents and purposes, I am treating this as a first time trip to Rome..which is why I feel like we can find a lot to do there with 8 days...at the same time, Amalfi is amazing..and a few days on the beach is worth it. I am not interested in visiting Naples, Capri or Pompeii. Mostly interested in Ravello + some combo of Amalfi, Positano, Praiano, Sorrento.

reason on not being interested in Pompeii is that one time/lifetime is enough...and Capri is extremely crowded and overpriced...although so is the rest of Amalfi possible. There is also Ischia where I havent been...

Another vote for heading down immediately to Capri/Amalfi coast and finishing with Rome

I suggest the bulk of the time in Rome & 2 nights in Sperlonga. In fact, with the money you save not going to the Amalfi, book an apartment in Rome for the whole time & leave your stuff there and go with your toothrush & swim stuff to Sperlonga on a whim (or not at all). In early June you won't have any trouble booking last minute. Go early in the morning and come back late your last day -- so effectively you'll have 2 nights & 3 days.

IMO, Ravello is one of the most magical places in the world. More than 2 or 3 nights there would have driven me batty, but maybe you would find them perfect.

Have you been to Salerno or Paestum?

The only problem with Ravello is that it's annoying to get to the other coast towns from there. I agree that it's magical, but a more central option would be to base in Positano or Amalfi and day trip to Ravello.

I honestly hate the idea of 4hrs of travel by train/bus/taxi after an 8hr flight from NY. We land in Rome at 9:30am and have the entire day to relax and explore...vs going straight to Amalfi and not not getting there until 2pm. If we do Amalfi, I would probably base in Amalfi or Positano to relax on the beach...or just stay in Ischia. Something like:
Day 1: Arrive 9:30am, nap, relax, explore
Day 2,3,4,5 - Explore Rome
Day 6 - Leave luggage in Rome. AM transfer to Amalfi/Positano, beach/relax
Day 7 - Ravello + more time to explore
Day 8 - relax, back to Rome by evening for dinner
Day 9 - AM flight home

If we book the same hotel for the last night, they will leet us leave all of our stuff there and just take a small bag for 2 nights.

you may want to consider train to Palermo from Rome and then catch ferries to Positano/Amalfi; from there you can ferry to Ravello.
